The answer is very simple: God's hand is found in all things that are broadly acceptable to society, and is not in anything that may look kooky or abhorrent.
For example, God gave us the printing press and blue skies and the revelation to give blacks the priesthood. But God did not cause the disaster in Haiti, he didn't command polygamy, and he never once said that blacks should be denied the priesthood.
I hope that clears things up.

Except...Mormons cannot tell what Gods truth is until after the Prophet who told them what Gods truth is has died and society has shown that it wasn't Gods truth in the first place.
E.g Prior to 1978 Mormons believed implicitly that Gods truth, as articulated by every Prophet from Brigham Young onwards, was that blacks had been cursed by God and should not be allowed to hold the Priesthood nor enter the Temple.
After 1978 Mormons believed implicitly that Gods truth, as articulated by every Prophet from SWK onwards, was that blacks had been cursed by God but that now God has changed His mind and blacks could be allowed the Priesthood and entrance to the Temple.
From this year onwards (until further light and knowledge is gained) Mormons have been told that actually, the current Prophet isn't so sure that the curse and banning of blacks was actually Gods truth in the first place.
Oh the joy of knowing Gods truth...
