peer monitoring and spontaneous punishment
Anyone who has read a little about how control and punishment arise in certain groups like churches, cults and ideologically extreme or hermetic organizations already knows that peer monitoring and social punishment (shunning and shaming) arises spontaneously and is acted out by lay members without horizontal direction. Such self-organizing emergent structures of group self monitoring and punishment are interesting and we have a case of it going on right now.
In another thread Droopy is dressing down a fellow member Harmony for not being orthodox enough (by his lights).
He is making the case that she isn't an authentic member of the group and should either conform and seek authenticity or leave and be shunned. He is trying to shame her.
Conformity in a detail is demanded and the jack booted are everywhere since they are the members themselves.
Go read that thread.

The shadow of the hegemon strikes again.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Sheesh, I just read through that mess. I can't wait for Droopy to tell me all about my faith next. That should be highly entertaining.

So what happens when the assholes have forced all the christ-like members out? Will they then start turning on each other?

I'm not letting people like Droopy pull stuff like that in the Church and neither is Harmony. She didn't put up with his BS and called him on it. Good for her.

Of course. Orthodoxy is relative and there will always be someone less orthodox. In the right environment even BCSpace could be shunned (perhaps for believing in evolution). Maybe Droopy's failure to be married could become an issue in some hyperorthodox Mormon dystopia.

I can't figure bcspace out. He accepts evolution, but considers Democrats like myself and Harry Reid as apostates?!? He states he only believes official doctrine, but when you quote official doctrine from the Church publications - he often rejects it. That's one confusing kid.

Sounds like you've figured him out perfectly!
