I showed this to my wife. This book is partly responsible for her awakening regarding the church. After she read the book (which I conveniently left lying around), the garments immediately came off and were replaced by Victoria's Secret (not kidding).

Awesome...it took me about 6-7 years to get my wife to ditch the garmies for Victoria's Secret underwear.

But, I kept my shoulder to the wheel and with my dedication to teaching her the real truth of Mormonism I can honestly say that I fought the good fight, I finished my intercourse, I kept her out of the Faith.

I think the reason for it being at the reference desk is probably what people have suggested. Unfortunately I recall missionaries bragging that they had destroyed Know Man Knows My History and I I saw nothing wrong with it at the time. I am now ashamed of myself for not telling them it was stealing and wrong.

Exactly. I can still remember the anti-porn vigilante mom in the 70's who glued together many pages of art history texts in the U of U library...

And yet we are still amazed by the apologists. We wonder: where do such people come from? Who would hide the facts?

It seems there are two possibilities here. Either zealous Mormons want to prevent people from being able to easily check out ISL, or the librarians have had to restrict access to the book to prevent zealous Mormons from vandalizing the text. Neither scenario reflects favorably on Utah Mormonism.

I think it is a reasonable compromise for controversial books. Both parties are satisfied, patrons know it is available, and it really isn't difficult for a person to go ask for it. With libraries downloading books onto e-book readers, and the book self-destructs in two weeks if not renewed, there won't be a problem in-- say-- twenty years.

The problem isn't just in Utah, as I pointed out. Utahans are the problem, in another sense, though.

The Index Librorum Prohibitorum (English: List of Prohibited Books) was a list of publications prohibited by the Catholic Church. A first version (the Pauline Index) was promulgated by Pope Paul IV in 1559, and a revised and somewhat relaxed form (the Tridentine Index) was authorized at the Council of Trent. The promulgation of the Index marked the "turning-point in the freedom of enquiry" in the Catholic world. The final (20th) edition appeared in 1948, and it was formally abolished on 14 June 1966 by Pope Paul VI.

The Index was regularly updated until the 1948 edition. This 20th edition contained 4,000 titles censored for various reasons: heresy, moral deficiency, sexual explicitness, and so on. That some atheists, such as Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, were not included was due to the general (Tridentine) rule that heretical works (i.e., works that contradict Catholic dogma) are ipso facto forbidden.

It took me several years after its release to finally get my hands on an undamaged copy of The Last Temptation of Christ. Yet last week at the Draper Library, I saw it just sitting there on the shelf, alongside several unmolested copies of Bill Maher's blasphemous Religulous.
