Why is God punishing his Prophet with Alzheimer's?

Post by _Polygamy-Porter »

I just read the news that the only living prophet on the face of the earth has Alzheimer's.

God is a sick bastard.

Polygamy-Porter, before you go using unwarranted adjectives on God, who is the doctor that diagnosed Thomas Monson with Alzheimer's?

And even if it were to turn out that Monson has Alzheimer's, God has an extremely complex job; the world is an extremely complex place; God makes an awful lot of crucial decisions every day. Are you saying that keeping Monson from contracting Alzheimer's should be enough of a priority for God for Him to make sure Monson doesn't get it?

Alzheimer's is a nasty way to die, but crucifixion is also a nasty way to die. If it were to turn out that Monson has Alzheimer's, God wouldn't be punishing him any more than God punished Jesus Christ.

That makes perfect sense, assuming Tom Monson is just another nice elderly grandfather living in Salt Lake City. As the only prophet on the earth, yeah, I think Thomas S. Monson's mental health is fairly important.

I wasn't aware that God "punished" Jesus Christ, but was under the impression that he suffered innocently as part of a divine plan. How Monson suffering dementia while leading the church is either "punishment" or part of a divine plan, I can't figure out.
Hey listen don't you let 'em get your mind...

If the business of managing the planet is so difficult for God that he has to prioritize his activities such that doing things like preventing a person from getting dementia is sometimes beyond his multitasking ability, then the God you worship is very weak indeed and not at all like the God traditionally worshiped in monotheistic traditions.

EAllusion, I agree with you 100%. There's a huge difference between the ideas behind the two different deities.

Tell me, is the deity you're talking about, "the God traditionally worshiped in monotheistic traditions" the one that has the type of omnipotence that would let Him cause souls to cease to exist, if He so chose? If so, will that God cause the unsaved to cease to exist, put them out of their misery so to speak, or is He going to let them suffer unbearable agony for the rest of eternity?

If the answers to those two questions are both yes, then who would a conscientious person be more likely to worship, a weak deity who was nonetheless good, or a much stronger deity who is demonstrably evil?

If the answer to either of those questions was no, then I'd be really interested in hearing more about the deity "traditionally worshiped in monotheistic traditions."

Not very weak compared to a regular mortal.
