Albion wrote:Well, subgenious, I guess my suspicions remain since you did not give an example from a regular Mormon meeting. That said, the first three links provided a long list of Mormon composers and it would be foolish to have charged that there were none. The second link worked and we were given of version of an oft sung Mormon song Ye Elders of Israel. Not bad for its genre but a little slow and plodding. Who exactly is being worshiped in the lyric. As I have agreed, it does all come down to opinion.

Most Mormon music glorifys Joseph Smith Jr or the organization, while Evangelic Christian music Glorifies Jesus, something you would think LDS would do with name

Mittens, in fairness your example are of concert performances. I think a fairer comparison would be between a typical Christian Sunday service and a typical Mormon sacrament service. No contest in my experience.

I have this song on my Christmas DVD from Andrea Bocelli, however it's Bocelli that makes this song, not Choir in background. Plus this is a song arranged and produced by Evangelic Christians so I can see why you like it. :smile:

well, if that is the measure i believe there are some snake handling churches in the hills of Tennessee that really offer bang for your buck!
(and Albion, you just keep moving those goalposts in the name of "fair comparison").

we are all so glad to hear about your xmas DVD...
ironically, your arrogance is giving evangelicals a bad name and has almost soured "evangelical" hymns to my ears.....
have you concluded, yet, that no one but you cares about evangelical vs Mormon music, the better of us only care about the actual substance not the pageantry. :surprised:
But hey, good luck with your ticket sales.

One of the biggest problems is found in the footnotes of Mark 16, where the oldest and most reliable don't sanction this

15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”

19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

Footnotes:a.Mark 16:8 Some manuscripts have the following ending between verses 8 and 9, and one manuscript has it after verse 8 (omitting verses 9-20): Then they quickly reported all these instructions to those around Peter. After this, Jesus himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation. Amen.

In my opinion, this is one of the more ignorant (and one of the silliest) arguments used by the anti-LDS. It comes directly from a standardized list of anti-LDS propaganda.

Here is a list of ALL of the songs in the current LDS Hymnal. The list is presented in alphabetical order according to the Title and the first line of the song.

http://www.LDS.org/cm/catalogsearchalph ... l#nullLink

by the way, the title of one of the songs Mittens is so quick to disparage is NOT "Warfaring man". If Mittens had checked it out for herself, she would have discovered the title is: "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief". Mittens also would then have discovered (well, let's make that "hopefully" would have been able to discover) that the song is NOT about Joseph Smith. The song is about our Savior, Jesus Christ.It was one of Joseph Smith's favorite hymns about the Savior. Here are the beautiful final two verses (verse #6 and #7) which reveal who the song is being sung about:

In pris’n I saw him next, condemned
To meet a traitor’s doom at morn.
The tide of lying tongues I stemmed,
And honored him, ‘mid shame and scorn.
My friendship’s utmost zeal to try,
He asked if I for him would die.
The flesh was weak; my blood ran chill,
But my free spirit cried, “I will!”

Then in a moment to my view
The stranger started from disguise.
The tokens in his hands I knew;
The Savior stood before mine eyes.
He spake, and my poor name he named,
“Of me thou hast not been ashamed.
These deeds shall they memorial be;
Fear not, thou didst them unto me.”

I can never remain joined in the singing of these last two verses because by then I am crying in thankfulness and in awe for what Christ did for us.

Blessings,

The LDS Hymnal does, of course, include many hymns written by those dreaded apostate Christians that Mormons revile so much, including A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief. I think it wonderful that this song written in 1826 moves you to think of Jesus which was probably the Christian intent...now if only.....

"A poor Wayfaring man of Grief" doesn't seem very inspiring since it's difficult to even consider much of a Christian theme

These songs here have a Christian theme
