Become an acolyte of Exu?

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

Universalist Unitarian. If you find a vibrant congregation, you'll get all the spirituality, friendliness, charitably, and sense of community you can handle without any requirement to buy into a particular religious mythology. UU's are a magnet for people who are very liberal in their approach to religion and/or want community and ritual in religion minus the mythology. They're also very tolerant of all manner of faiths, and generally wouldn't be hostile to Mormons in their midst. The problem is that it is a niche religion and you aren't necessarily going to find a vibrant congregation everywhere. If you are in large metropolitan area or liberal town, that increases your chances.

If you are in Atlanta:

Fundamentalist religious people like most Mormons tend to look at such liberalism as villainous - likely describing them as "relativists" - and I'm not sure if that would be an issue in your family's case.

Remember in 2008 when a spree killer/terrorist attempted to shoot up a Church in Tennessee he thought would be full of liberals and gays because he thought they were responsible for the economic crisis? The story died down relatively quickly because it didn't feed into any ready-made narratives, but that was a UU Church.

You want moral relativism? How is this?
Joseph Smith wrote:That which is wrong under one circumstance, may be, and often is, right under another. God said, 'Thou shalt not kill'; at another time He said, 'Thou shalt utterly destroy.' This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted—by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire.'

I appreciate you looking into that EA. It is on the other side of Atlanta, but Sunday traffic is usually tolerable. I'll look into it.

Kevin Graham wrote:It is. The larged Baptist Church on the planet is within a few miles of us. It is like a circus. But the problem, aside from it being Baptist, is that they frequently preach a lot of anti-Mormon stuff, which is something my wife would never tolerate.

This was also a real requirement for me as well. Any church that preached anti-Mormonism, even if I agreed with it, was an instant deal breaker for me. My family had to feel comfortable going there.

If you are still in Brazil, then I think you should consider Catholicism, mainly because I would consider it vastly superior of a religious experience to the other religions I encountered in Brazil. I certainly wouldn't be able to tolerate the intolerance of popular sects like Assembleia de Deus or other similar Pentecostales.

LDSfaqs: If you are going to call Kevin to repent, then do it in a PM. Putting it out there for everyone to see just says that you are looking to glorify yourself and it will only provoke a negative reaction (and rightly so). You should be ashamed of yourself for implying that difficulties in Kevin's marriage somehow imply that he has "joined the dark side." You were absolutely right to be offended when people on this board brought up your personal history, and given that history I simply cannot believe that you would dare to say something like that. Look to the beam in your own eye before calling out anyone else.

Cicero the more you post the more I like you. You are a class act.

If I was in Brazil, I'd be checking out the Afro-Catholic groups, but then, I don't have a wife ;)

I already suggested candomble. What other Afro-Brazilian diaspora Catholic/Yoruba syncretistic religion would you suggest?

They're good places to start. I know more about the Caribbean ones, mostly Voodun and Santeria.

I asked a Santeria practioner once if she would work with me. She turned me down. Guess I was throwing off some bad mojo. Many are reluctant to let in a white guy. After that I sort of lost interest all though there are a lot of Santeria practioners where I live.

Have you ever read Mama Lola?
