I don't get you LDST...what made you change your mind on this?

You were there on the board when this all happened; you even started a thread calling for Darrick's banning. You clearly understood he was a threat, he's threatened DCP, MCB and had turned his sights on JG-- You saw the posts Jersey Girl made to EA and how he brushed her off, threatening her with banning instead of doing something, ANYTHING to diffuse the situation and try to protect the posters. You did not turn against her until later.

I just went back and read the thread. It's amazing how unconcerned EA acted. He's also the one who misconstrued her comments, assuming she was going to sue, yet in her comments, she tries to get him to do his job as a moderator by reminding him that the board had a legal contractual agreement they needed to abide by.

This whole mess could have been so easily avoided, it's pathetic.

My mind hasn't changed at all. Two events prompted my boycott:

1. Derrick seemed to be issuing threats against DCP
2. Derrick seemed to be looking for MCB's in real life information to inflict harm

That's it. I didn't see where Jersey Girl was threatened, but I did see where the two individuals above were threatened. Notice I didn't make threats to board, to the admins, or to anyone else - I simply said I wouldn't associate with a place that allowed Derrick to be a member. And I took some heat for it from some people I respect. But, I hold no ill will towards anyone for their opinion of what I did.

I didn't turn on Jersey Girl, I stood up for Shades. I believe that he has been unfairly maligned in this whole affair and I wasn't going to stand on the sidelines when I knew full well that Jersey Girl was manipulating the facts.

All facts are on the table now, in full view and as I said earlier, seems the community can see that Shades wasn't so nuts.

No.

I was banned for a week to 10 days...cannot recall exactly how long.

I was then unbanned for 1-2 days when I had complete and open access to the board.

I was then permanently banned.

Shades addressed that as well:

Alter Idem says that Jersey Girl was temporarily unbanned before being perma-banned. This indicates, in his mind, that all was forgiven for at least a short time. That's not how I remember it; my recollection is that we gave her a temporary ban until we could all hash out what should be done about her, but the temporary ban expired before we were finished discussing the issue. Once we were finished and I made the final decision, the permanent ban went into effect.

I really don't know how this information affects the discussion. Shades and the other mods admit they spent a long time hashing it out. I would think his willingness to wait to hash it out would weigh in his favor.

She meant what she said. She was not panicking. She was talking about initiating a complaint or inquiry with the webhost to have the legal contractual agreements you signed looked at to determine if the webhost could force you to remove a threatening poster. She was demanding that you take responsiblity for what happened on your board.

She did not say she was going to sue you and you knew that. Apparently you spent weeks mulling it over (and probably discussing it behind the scenes with others) and came to the conclusion that her threats could be construed as a lawsuit. Then you permanently banned her.

A.I., if you've responded to this and I missed it, I apologize and would appreciate being pointed to your response.

It's been made clear in Jersey Girl's posts and PMs to LDStoronto that she believed Darrick was engaged in criminal activity. Her research showed that dreamhost was not liable for that criminal activity but Mav, and probably Shades and EA, were.

I don't understand how you can see that information and not only jump to the conclusion that Jersey Girl clearly never threatened to involve the law, in terms of courts and lawyers, but then insist that someone (Shades) who sees it otherwise is delusional and hiding something.

Help me out here. Throw me a bone. As I said before, I spent hours reading and rereading all the posts in question when I first found out about this all. (I wasn't around when it went down.) I would have drawn the same conclusion that Shades and EA did.

You say that Jersey Girl was left waiting too long. As I understand it, the first mod on the scene was EA, and he explained the timeline here:

I logged on around what was 6:30am my time and saw several dozen independent reports. No joke. They were with respect to a couple of lengthy threads, so I slogged through those and sequestered posts to their appropriate forums dealing with the reports in a row. The most serious issue was Darrick speculating on MCB's in real life identity in a creepy way. Granted, he was drastically off and only seemed to connect the in real life person based on a loose connection to Mormonism and the same initials, but I erased that post. All in all, this took me quite some time. Right around the time I was finishing this, LDST started his boycott thread that you can read where Jersey Girl chimes in. The 12 hour wait that keeps getting mentioned is in reference to the time where no mods were on. From there, what happened is discussed in this thread.

You know, I was a mod on ZLMB, and it was one awful, thankless job. I had a real life to attend to. Neither I nor the other mods were online, on-call, 24/7. How can you fault them for this delay when, in the first place, no mod was even online for 12 hours after it went down? So it was only a few more hours until Harmony stepped in.

Seriously, what was going to happen in those few hours that was going to make a huge difference in the situation? It's not like any poster on this board was going to jump up and say, Hey, Yeah, Darrick, I know Jersey Girl and MCB's real life information, and here it is! No problem, dude! No one on this board was going to provide that information. Letting him stay on the board a couple of hours more made absolutely no difference. If he were seriously ferreting out information about posters, he would have already done so, and could continue to do so, even banned from the board. And, frankly, he was acting so nutty I doubt he was in a state of mind to perform such a concentrated task in the first place.

Part of me thinks this comes down to a fundamental difference of opinions in how this board should be run. Some posters believe Shade's libertarian philosophy is flawed, and invites these sort of problems. I tend to agree. But I'm willing to accept that this is his board, he runs it as he sees fit, and if it doesn't suit me, it's my responsibility to stop participating and go elsewhere or nowhere. No one is chained to the keyboard. No one forced Jersey Girl to continue to banter with someone who was clearly going off the deep end. I know it's hard to stop once you've really engaged, but if you don't stop when things are clearly going south in a hurry, then you do bear some responsibility for the end result. You want Shades to accept responsibility for letting Darrick participate in the first place. How about asking Jersey Girl to accept some responsibility for not only continuing to engage someone who was clearly off his nut and barely coherent, and then using language that did, indeed, despite your denials, strongly indicate she thought criminal activity was occurring and that admin and mods would be responsible for that in some sort of "legal fight"????

I consider myself Jersey Girl's friend. I did then and still do. But I want to be fair to everyone in this situation, and I don't think you're being fair to Shades and EA.

I'm sorry, but Snooki whining about her safety and demanding the mods attend to her emotional needs after she danced with crazy is silly. It's really, really, silly.

Dr. Shades did the right thing. Jersey Girl needs to sincerely humble herself, apologize to Dr. Shades, Darrick for antagonizing him, the board for being a force du crazy, and officially request reinstatement to MDB. If she doesn't want this, then she needs to bugger off, ask her posse to stop posting on her crazy behalf, and go “F” up another Mormon forum (even though she's not, nor has ever been a Mormon).

Liz just needs to stop. It's embarrassing.

I want to state for the record that I have nothing against Jersey Girl and hold no grudges. But she made a fatal mistake and deserved to be booted forever. Let this be a lesson for everyone. She should have handled the matter differently and with a little patience.

I was watching this unfold when it happened, and Jersey Girl was definitely fueling the flames so to speak.

What Jersey Girl did when she contacted the webhost is exactly what she claimed she would do, and that was start crap for the board. Now she is trying to come off as "misunderstood and misrepresented".

Any reasonable person knows to guard personal information on the internet. If a nut job wants to find you, they will find you. You just have to make it as difficult for them as possible by guarding that information. Baiting them in conversations doesn't help the situation.

As I stated previously, I stand by what I have written. It has nothing to do with my personal feelings toward Shades. He knows that he has my respect, and his support as a Moderator. That doesn't mean that I have to agree with his decision. Respect it? Yes. Agree? No.

I do agree that this whole mess needs to be dropped. I wanted to make sure that Jersey Girl at least had an opportunity to have her say, and she has.

Whatever conclusions the posters here come to is up to them. I really don't care one way or the other.

I will say one more thing about cyber stalking. Maybe I am a little more sensitive to Jersey Girl's plight because I was a victim of cyber stalking 10 years ago. It is scary, and I hope that no one here has to deal with it.

This is complete and utter horse crap. The fact that Liz and A.I. are defending her in an attempt to get her posting privileges back are silly.

Whatever, dude. Everyone gets cyberstalked at one point or another. I had Simon Belmont cyberstalk me. I've had others do it, too. It's the nature of the world we live in today. “F”, corporations, governments... Everyone is cyberstalking our asses to gather information about us to whatever end. It is what it is...
