It really doesn't matter if Romney is right or wrong on this issue. He went to Britain as part of an effort to be seen dealing with foreigners to lend substance to his supposed "foreign affairs" ability. Whether it a big or small matter to Americans you don't start off by insulting your host's abilities. To even remotely compare a full blown Olympics in a population center like the City of London with a smaller Olympics in a town like Salt Lake is ridiculous.

Romney is in a real bind here. He's embarrassed himself at the Olympics! Heads-of-state from all over the world are in London for the opening ceremonies and Romney slighted the hosts and America's closest ally in their homeland in his first foreign policy appearance as Presidential nominee. Not good. He might have to do business with these men and women in four months and they're going to think he's a buffoon. God Bless America.

Romney suffers from a compulsive one-upmanship which he seems to have great difficulty controlling. There was the NASCAR snafu: Asked by the AP reporter if he follows NASCAR, Romney responded, "Not as closely as some of the most ardent fans. But I have some great friends who are NASCAR team owners."

That's not exactly going to make you a good ol' boy in Charlotte or Tuscaloosa, Mitt.

To be fair, there are a lot of problems with some elements of the London games, which a lot of Londoners would freely admit. It's just a matter of tact. You don't tell your sister she's having a bad hair day at her wedding.

By the way, here's a bit of a speech Romney made before American Olympians in 2002:

“You Olympians, however, know you didn’t get here solely on your own power. For most of you, loving parents, sisters or brothers, encouraged your hopes, coaches guided, communities built venues in order to organize competitions. All Olympians stand on the shoulders of those who lifted them. We’ve already cheered the Olympians, let’s also cheer the parents, coaches, and communities. All right!"

Awfully collectivist, Governor. Sounds like someone else I heard recently...

Yes, while he is fun to laugh at, I still lament the fact that if only Newt had dropped out after the Florida primary, we would have had Frothy Santorum as the nominee.

My favorite part about the Romney campaign stepping in it: that Obama just doesn't understand the special Anglo-Saxon heritage we share with England.

Carl Lewis, who spoke to The Independent as the First Lady, Michelle Obama, arrived in London to lead the US delegation, said: "Every Olympics is ready, I don't care whatever he [Romney] said. I swear, sometimes I think some Americans shouldn't leave the country. Are you kidding me, stay home if you don't know what to say."

This is the first time I've ever been personally bothered by one of Romney's many gaffes. He and his wife have said many unfortunate things during his campaign, things that were ill-advised and which reflected poorly on him and his philosophies. But, this truly offends me because it reflects badly on our country in the eyes of the world. We have an image problem to begin with-- and Romney isn't helping.

I've never been more grateful that I've never been shy about my own political opinions-- at least none of my UK/Irish friends will associate me with his asininity.

The irony is that his only objective was to get a photo-op with some world leaders and look presidential. Before hand, he was saying that he wasn't going to criticize the President to our allies, and therefore wouldn't have much to talk about. It turns out he couldn't turn off the negativity and criticized his hosts!

Romney started things off by criticizing London’s preparedness for the Olympics. He then forgot the name of British Labour Leader Ed Miliband, and then he admitted that he had been given a secret briefing by MI6. This led the British to ask aloud if they have another George W. Bush on their hands, “Romney blunders again by revealing he’s had (supposedly) top secret briefing by John Sawers, MI6 boss. Do we have a new Dubya on our hands?” asked Daily Mail Political Editor James Chapman.

Let's sum up the tally of people he's managed to directly offend in less than a week:
The British Prime Minister
The Lord Mayor of London
The Leader of the Opposition
The Head of The British Secret Service
