Another John Dehlin Thread....Sorry!
Ok, I know John Dehlin has been discussed ad nauseum on here recently. But a couple of comments regarding his talk at the Sunstone Symposium have left me wondering. Cicero mentioned him in one of his posts and so did MsJack.
I'm not a huge Dehlin fan but I've listened to a few of his podcasts and I did attend one of his Mormon Stories conferences a year or so ago when a family member invited me to go with them. I met him and talked briefly with him in person and he seems like a very nice, genuinely sincere man.
I have a vague impression that he was active, then less active, then completely inactive. But now it sounds like he's back to being active again....is that true?
That kind of shocks me because he spoke at the conference I attended and he seemed quite bitter and angry towards the church. He stated that he and his family were completely out and inferred that he felt this was permanent for him.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Thanks in advance!

Perhaps he realizes he needs to do a certain amount of attending church to be a more effective wolf ~_-

I don't know him personally, but I think that pretty much sums it up. As he mentioned in his Sunstone presentation, he reserves the right to change his mind again . . .
At the moment, the Church (or more specifically, the upper echelons of church hierarchy) seems to be in a relatively tolerant mood, and so John feels very comfortable staying. A cynic would say this has something to do with Mitt Romney, but actually the Church has gone through these peoriods many times in the past. Unfortunately, such tolerant periods have been frequently followed by "reformations" and purges, and that most certainly could happen again.

You sound bothered by his currently perceived actions. Does the NOM style bother you? If so, why?

John Dehlin made this comment
“The Internet — combined with the church’s passion for positive PR and the intense media exposure of the Romney moment — have combined to create a perfect storm of protection — almost a safe haven — for progressive Mormons to speak without fear of reprisal.”

A wave of excommunications would not help the Romney campaign at all.

John here. I've gone back and forth a bit in terms of activity. Probably will continue to oscillate. There's nothing really strategic behind it. It all just depends on family stuff, and how I'm feeling, etc.

Actually that was sarcasm, I was just clowning around making fun of the apologist wolf in sheeps clothing meme. I have no probs with Dehlin whatsoever.zeezrom wrote:Nomomo wrote:Perhaps he realizes he needs to do a certain amount of attending church to be a more effective wolf ~_-

As for your other question, the NOM style doesn't bother me, but I have a hell lot more respect for Dehlin who can admit what he doesn't believe than I do for instance someone who doesn't believe something yet hasn't the balls to admit it.
