MFBukowski: Shafted By the Mopologists?

Post by _Doctor Scratch »

After a dry spell, it seems that the interesting developments are starting to rain down. Check out this post from our old buddy mfbukowski:

I sent them a check a couple of months ago and they still have not signed me up. I got back an email saying they would but no results even with me sending them another email.

Was that tied in somehow with the Maxwell Institute?

So, what--they're just taking his money but not giving him what he paid for?

ERayR wrote:No this is not tied to MI and is available as a free download with printed copies available for printing cost upon request.

mfbukowski wrote:Not so. You have to send them 30 bucks and they have to send you a password- someone named Benjamin Huff is supposed to be the secretary but he is unresponsive.

It also appears that smpt.org is no longer a working website. Maybe I am doing something wrong- ?

Wow! It sounds like they are derelict in their duties, though to be fair, as MFB himself admits, it could be that he simply messed something up, though I can't imagine what that might be.

Later, we learn that he isn't the only one who's gotten burned by the SMPT:

I get emails ocassionally from him as well. I sent in some cash as well and got bupkus in return, except for these emails

What happened, I wonder? Did they divert the donations from the SMPT over to this new, Bryce Haymond-run venture?

MFB, in response to Duncan's comments, concludes rather ominously:

Two for two.

Not good.

I'm not sure if you are being serious or not, but for those that don't know it is (or was I guess) the Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology. It was formed in 2003 at a conference I attended at Yale organized by a guy named Ken West who was a graduate student there (I've often wondered what happened to that guy). The conference was a really cool mix of BYU Religion Department big wigs, apologists, non-Mormons and even evangelical critics. Michael Quinn got dissed, but otherwise it went very well. Here is DCP's summary of the conference (http://maxwellinstitute.BYU.edu/publications/insights/?vol=23&num=3&id=347). The SMPT was formed there, but it doesn't sound like it has done much in the last 9 years.

Oops! Forgot!

Sounded pretty cool at the time. Too bad less noble pursuits took precedence.

I would like to join with MrStakhanovite in expressing my condolences to Bukowski and Duncun at this time when they have lost 30 dollars.

My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

I would expect members of that society to have a deep understanding of why they lost their money and trust it was God's will.

I am very confused- what are you saying? SMPT is a scam? Kofford Books is a scam? What are you saying?

Uh-oh. Has mfbukowski become another statistic in the world of Mormon affinity fraud? Or is there a more pragmatic explanation?
