It's a drop in the bucket compared to all the tithing he's paid. He's got the same return on his investment.

Sounds to me like that Ken West learned a trick or two from his years of studying about how JSJr did it.

A few SMPT members I've spoken to have complained that the current president of the executive committee has basically run the organization into the ground.

It's none of our business how SMPT spends the money. We simply need to pay our fees and have faith, and then we will be blessed.

He's not in charge anymore.

He has mentioned it here.

http://www.mormondialogue.org/topic/58565-smpt-problems/ or if you do not have access here is what Dan Peterson said:

I've heard reports that a few people have written to the Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology (SMPT), even sent money in one or two cases, and have failed to get a reply.

I don't know where those comments have been made, and I don't have time to go looking for them right now.

But I apologize.

Anybody in that position should feel free to drop me a note, at daniel_peterson@BYU.edu.

I'm the president of the Society, but, off hand, I can't tell you what happened.

We're a small group, with very little funding and no staff. Our devoted secretary, Ben Huff (a professor of philosophy at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia), handles the business of the Society pretty much on his own time with little or no help from anybody else (including the Society's worthless president). He's wonderful, but I suppose it's possible that he's overlooked or mislaid something.

Write to me, and I'll try to see what might have happened.

Maybe if they pray had enough, they'll find $30 in their dry cleaning to compensate for the $30 lost to these clowns. Almost like praying to find your car keys while kids starve in Africa, and such.

Well, it must be difficult for him, since the society's mission statement includes the words:

" All its publications, conferences, and other forums for discussion will take seriously both the commitments of faith and the standards of scholarship."

They might as well say "The society will produce hot ice".
Zadok:
I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

Would you mind elaborating on this a bit?

ETA: he's blubbering about this, by the way:

Daniel Peterson wrote:Incidentally, feel free to blame it all on me. Over on another board, Chris Smith has pseudonymously posted the following: "A few SMPT members I've spoken to have complained that the current president of the executive committee [which would be yours truly] has basically run the organization into the ground."

It's very likely, of course, that these unspecified anonymous complainers -- I would be surprised if Loyd Ericson (a.k.a. "The Narrator," who isn't a member of my fan club) isn't prominent among them -- are correct. But it would be helpful if they could indicate specifically what I've done to accomplish this. And they should probably communicate their findings to the board of the Society, which just voted unanimously (I think) to extend my term as president.

We'll be holding this year's annual SMPT symposium in September. Full announcement and program soon to come.

Interesting that they apparently have no problem scheduling their conference and conducting votes, and yet when it comes to responsibly handling donors' money, it's a complete disaster.
