After reading a bit in MsJack's thread, I went over to MADB and joined to ask what their opinions were of Schryver's paper. I simply posted this:

"Do you believe that Will Schryver's paper will still be published?"

Within minutes I was banned for life. I emailed the moderators and tried to explain that I was just simply asking a question that I wanted their opinions on....but they never even responded.

Nice way to run a "discussion" forum, huh?

I remember that. I think the mods assumed you were a troll because a couple of others had posted the same question. Consiglieri was one of them and he was also banned. His thread consisted of maybe a two sentence inquiry. Then his thread disappeared.

To my recollection, everyone who asked the question was immediately and permanently banned.

Yeah, I think I just got caught in the clean sweep they were doing at that time and I now know how sensitive they must have been regarding Schryver and his paper. How would they have known that I had no ulterior motive for asking this question? I honestly did not.....but I can see why they'd assume I did.

It still does not make my treatment right....but I understand it now at least.

It came in two stages. First, I was involved in a discussion on blacks and the priesthood, and Dan Peterson turned up in order to try and do damage control. I forget the specifics of what points were being made, but at some point he began to say--over and over again--"Am I a racist? Am I a racist, Scratch?" Obviously, I at least knew better than to straight up call him a racist. He had adduced his rather distasteful example about how he's advised interracial couples in an ecclesiastical-leadership capacity, and he warned them about how much "trouble" they are likely to encounter, how "difficult" it will be, etc., and when I expressed my misgivings/discomfort with this, he insisted that I call him a "racist." So I got put in the Queue. (Do they still use that?)

My permanent banning came after Dan made a false accusation against me. Someone launched a thread on peer review at FARMS, and I made a post arguing that the FARMS peer review is atypical, and it actually made it out of the queue. In response, DCP did one of his posts where begins with, "Incidentally, I happened to...." claiming that I'd called him a "douchebag" on RfM, or something like that. I denied it, and they permanently banned me.

Back during l'affaire de Seattle Ghost Writer, the board was down for a while. One of SGW's charges was that I had made a death threat against him. This quite obviously disturbed me, not just because I hadn't done that, but because I knew exactly how and what he misunderstood that led him to think that. I wanted to be able to quickly explain things to him, but with the board down I couldn't.

I had always vowed never to register at MDD, but since SGW had made his charge against me there, I registered an account so I could pm Bond and Ceeboo and explain myself. I didn't make a post and I never intended to post. I just wanted to explain things to those two so they could relay the information to SGW or the board in general, whatever they saw fit.

I made my pm's and when I came back to check my inbox I was banned and locked out of viewing the board.

------

(For the benefit of newbies: the SGW business began here and involved some board members, including myself, making fun of an online soft-core/romance story of SGW's. Some people took the merriment a bit far by posting a link to his Facebook page and making comments on pictures there. Others, like Kimberly Ann, Jack, and Spurven explicitly called for that to end. In my comment on the story I made mention of being disturbed by the avatar (his photo). Spurven teased me by reposting a picture of it with a cheesy come-on line. I responded directly to Spurven by posting an animated .gif of a ouija board spelling out D I E. I thought it was clear I was responding to Spurven, because I quoted his post. However, because that post included the avatar photo, SGW took my joke .gif as a personal threat to him. It was a misreading, but I understood how he could make that mistake, especially if he were reading a thread where people were making fun of his story and posting personal links. I'm sure he read through it very fast and very upset.

SGW filed a DMCA complaint with Dreamhost and MDB was down for a while, thus I registered at MDD to pm a few friends since it was there that it was being said I had made a death threat against SGW. When MDB came back up, SGW returned and the discussion continued here. SGW's claim of copyright violation was discussed at length and quite clearly by Jack, here (note Nevo quotes from MDD in this thread). Later, there was some suggestion that some/all posts made on MDB by SGW were not in fact made by him. I don't know if that includes the first thread I linked to in this paragraph or not, but apparently the real SGW pm'd Shades at some point after that thread and told him someone else was posting as him here (I think there was one other thread where people thought they were conversing with SGW.)

As of last year, yes. I was put in the queue sometime during the months when I wasn't even posting there, and they never released any of my posts from it, so it was effectively a ban.

In May, when I saw that Pahoran was using my private message in his signature without my permission, I filed a ticket and nicely asked the moderating team to please remove it from his signature---remember, it's also against the posted rules of the forum to quote another member of the forum in your signature without their permission. Instead they instantly banned me.

A few days ago, I logged into the forum just to see if I could access my old private messages. Upon finding out that I couldn't, I asked a friend of mine on the forum to contact Pahoran about his use of my private correspondence so that I could post the entirety of it. This friend was worried about getting in trouble for acting as a go-between (remember, the admins read private messages there), so s/he contacted Nemesis to make sure it was okay, to which Nemesis said no. That night, I noticed that I'd been IP-banned from even viewing the forum. This was easily circumvented with an IP mask.

They're free to capriciously decide who can and can't post there if they want. They're free to disregard the privacy of others. They're free to circle the wagons around the misogyny of their favorite apologists. But using someone's IP information to try and block them from viewing a public forum is creepy, stalkerish behavior. I will never again touch that place without an IP mask up, and tomorrow I plan to call my ISP and see if they'll assign me a new IP. It's a vile forum run by vile people and I regret ever having registered there.

No, Madison, it sure doesn't.

There is a lot of "friendly" fire on the other board as well as collateral damage. I've learned the hard way. I used to refer friends to that board. I don't do that anymore.

It's a great place to refer friends to if you're hoping they'll leave the church.

First time was for pointing out that one of the apologist's math and conclusions were faulty and crap.

Second time was for calling a Hamblin thread an exercise in mental masturbation as they went about proving the brass plates to have definitely been written in Hebrew.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

D&C 121:39 comes to mind..
39 We have learned by sad experience that it is the nature and disposition of almost all men, as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.
About Joseph Smith.. How do you think his persona was influenced by being the storyteller since childhood? Mastering the art of going pale, changing his voice, and mesmerizing his audience.. How do you think he was influenced by keeping secrets and lying for his wife and the church members for decades?
