If porn consumption is strictly a non-LDS problem (because LDS men don't want to risk getting caught by their wives. Non-LDS men don't have to worry because non-LDS women don't care, according to why me) I wonder why the church has made it such a big issue lately. Porn has become a huge issue in the church, and I don't think it is because they are concerned for their non-mormon friends. I've heard multiple gossipy stories within my large LDS circle of friends and family about how so and so left her husband because he is addicted to porn. Based on the rumors and gossip, it seems about half the LDS male population is addicted to porn. I'm sure most of these stories are exaggerated. But when you take into account the church rumor mill, the talks and lessons on the dangers of porn, and the stats showing Utah's porn ranking, I don't thinnk we can blame it all on non-mormons who don't have access to seedy porn shops.

whyme, the classiest thing you can do is to stay schtum. Trust me on this.

It is not my fault if this board has a porn fetish. Over and over again there are threads about porn, usually ignorant of the business. Porn is destructive in general. However there are a couple of producers who attempt to give a more pleasant porn experience for a price. Which is one reason why people subscribe to porn.

Someone needs to break the fallacy that exists here about porn and its business strategies.

By a show of hands, who thinks that Why Me will at some point figure out that sharing his curiously specific knowledge about viewing pornography is a lot like a believing Mormon jumping into a thread about the Word of Wisdom and telling everyone how to nose a cask of whiskey?

I don't want to break your bubble but women are also watching porn. It is not just a male thing. A few sites cater to women. They show porn geared toward women and their fantasies. I am sure that Mormon women are also watching porn.

However, the LDS have much to lose if caught watching porn. The marriage can dissolve and church callings can be lost. There is also the knowledge among Mormons that god would not be pleased with porn viewing.

Now why is the church concerned about porn viewing. First, when one watches porn one is watching human beings having sex. Usually these people are not married to each other when they make the scene. Thus, viewing porn encourages people to sin by fornication. Second, it is addictive. There is something about humans watching humans having sex, catering to the sexual fantasy that makes it addictive for the viewer. And lets face it, real sex is not porn and so, the fantasy stays alive that it could be.

Yes, we understand that there is cheap stuff out there for the masses, but for the more demanding porn connoisseurs with refined tastes you must pay a price. Mormons demand high quality porn. Just as there are cheap strip clubs, and then there's the expensive club that Tom Cruise sneaks into in Eyes Wide Shut. You prefer the Eyes Wide Shut club, as do the Mormon porn consumers.

It is not difficult to know about porn when one knows people who were involved in the business and who are still involved. In fact, just today I was talking to someone today about his dvd sales and rentals.

However, he does claim that the internet has hurt the industry. But the industry is not dead yet. It always has a way to reinvent itself. And the free sites skim scenes from the industry producers. Without dvds to skim from, there would be no free sites.

Here is what I think: Mormon porn addicts usually go to the high quality, less exploitive sites. I think that they want to view the porn that does not degrade women or men. They want natural porn without the dirty language and lust. They want the more artistic porn that one can find on a couple of internet paid sites. In other words they want to watch two people having sex in a natural and "loving" way. They need to rationalize why they are watching such sites.

And they do it with eyes wide open with a tinge of guilt.

I can't believe Mormons are so opposed to watching porn. Every other religion in the US is totally cool with it. I have never heard of anyone who is not LDS being opposed to porn.

But back to my main question. Since it is only a non-LDS problem, why is the church so concerned? Obviously the members are following their counsel and avoiding porn because Utah's ranking is caused by non-mormons who don't have access to porn shops. So why is the church preaching to the choir?

I do get first hand information. But really researching the business is not a problem, if one wants to take the time. The porn industry has transformed and continues to be in transformation. It is a multi-national business and a part of globalization.

The problem with the business is that it tends to ruin lives, especially the actors and actresses in the business.
