“Golden Days: A Celebration of Life” President Thomas S. Mon

Post by _Boilermaker »

I see they are having a celebration of Thomas S. Monson's 85th birthday on August 17. Sounds like a good Friday night date night with my wife.

Will this be on BYUtv or broadcast to chapels?

Will Arthur Patton be in attendance?

I think it will be very interesting to see how this public appearance of President Monson is handled considering the recent information about his declining health.

Will he speak? Or just sit and listen?

I've read that this celebration will be similar to ones held for Pres. Hinckley (see below). Does anyone know if Hinckley spoke at these?

The celebration will follow the precedent set by the late LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley, who hosted two large birthday galas – one for his 90th and another for his 95th. Hinckley died in January 2008 at age 97.

Might I suggest a suitable theme song:

Hmmmmm...are his days truly "Golden" or do they just have the appearance of being "Golden". I would venture to say that his days are most likely tumbagan. What does your bosom tell you?

My bosom tells me his days are...numbered.

Yes, he did (starts at about 1:48:00): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XlSSmREkfs

Gordon B. Hinckley was much more interested in adulation and using the Church for personal aggrandizement than Thomas Monson, though. And the level of worship he received from members was proportionately more intense.

I think the feelings that a lot of faithful Latter-day Saints have about Monson succeeding Hinckley are analogous to what would have happened if Ed McMahon took over The Tonight Show after Johnny Carson retired.

A cult of personality arises when an individual uses mass media, propaganda, or other methods, to create an idealized and heroic public image, often through unquestioning flattery and praise. Sociologist Max Weber developed a tripartite classification of authority; the cult of personality holds parallels with what Weber defined as "charismatic authority". A cult of personality is similar to hero worship, except that it is established by mass media and propaganda.

True that.
