"A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth - some obvious truth he isn't supposed to say." - Michael Kinsley
Pity poor Andrea Saul, who had the audacity to be honest and truthful in defense of Mitt Romney.
Background: Saul was responding to an ad from the pro-Obama SuperPAC Priorities USA Action, which ran an ad in which Joe Scoptic, an Indiana Steelworker who was laid off from a plant funded by Bain Capital, discusses losing his health insurance and the subsequent death of his wife from cancer.
In defense of Romney, Saul said "To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney's health care plan, they would have had health care."
What were you thinking Andrea? How DARE you speak the truth!
For Republicans, the fact that Saul actually mentioned a legislative act passed by their own Presidential Candidate that could have lead to saving a human life was seen as a gigantic strategic blunder.
Speaking on Sean Hannity's show, Ann Coulter blasted Saul:
"...her response was, ‘Well, if she had lived in Massachusetts with Mitt Romney’s health care plan, she would have had health insurance.’ Anyone who donates to Mitt Romney, and I mean the big donors, ought to say if Andrea Saul isn’t fired and off the campaign tomorrow, they are not giving another dime, because it is not worth fighting for this man if this is the kind of spokesman he has…
There’s no point in you doing your show, there’s no point in going to the convention and pushing for this man if he’s employing morons like this. This ad is the turning point and she has nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat! She should be off the campaign.”
Red State Founder Erick Erickson tweeted:
"OMG. This might just be the moment Mitt Romney lost the election. Wow."
Watch GOP Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn loyally and steadfastly refuse to discuss the existence of Romneycare in a CNN interview
For me this is the essential hypocracy of the Republican campaign: what is good for Massachusetts is a threat to the very foundation of the United States.
