LOL Many dazzling new twists became necessary as the situation deteriorated. Only thing-- they really weren't that new.

Sometimes it is better to look at the death of a loved one with the blessing of uncertainty: "I don't understand why this had to happen to us. God doesn't know why either." Mormonism doesn't provide that blessing.

Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

Perhaps Mormonisms response is the totalitarian desire to recreate the world in its own image.

Okay, Brother Stak, I get that I fully nailed this sucker and made it no more a mystery and settled the problem of Death head on in the traditional Christian doctrine everybody Christian only THINKS they understand and probably wont understand it any better now either, but EOD! Where are my props?
If I had done as well with an opened ended mass of confusion that lent credence to every wind of philosophical jargon would you have been all a gush with lavish praise? Why tempt the truth and just run off like it is shame to have to hear it?
You thought there was no Mormon answer. Don't you realize yet that I am the ONLY Mormon alive anymore, still?

Re: Can Mormons answer Death?
This note starts with an apology. I started thinking of Camus and found dust and cobwebs in my memory. Thick. Stak I thought your blog post was interesting. I remember somewhat from Camus a connection to the idea of Christian atheism. I am sure that phrase is from people other than Camus. People interested in Bonhoffer can see parallels in thought to Camus. Pushing a reading of Bonhoffer towards an atheism he did not himself hold, but respected, connects the two closer in thought.
A rough summary might be like this. Meaning and moral clarity lies in the present life seen clearly. It cannot lie in some future eternal purpose. A purpose not found in living in the present is not a moral purpose for humans but may in fact be a mask or barrier to seeing morally.
I remember my first reading of the Stranger c 1967, which may have been chemically distorted, which allowed a fascination with the characters detachment. similarly I find comments in Amazon sales review,
" Meusault is an anti-hero. His only redeeming quality is his honesty, no matter how absurd. In existential terms, he is "authentic" to himself. Meusault does not believe in God, but he cannot lie because he is true to himself. This inability to falsify empathy ultimately condemns him. Meursault has faith only in what he, himself, can see or experience with his other senses. He is not a philosopher, a theologian or a deep thinker. Meursault exists as he is, not trying to be anything more or less than himself."
Later having read "The Rebel" I suspect such reading as seriously off. Instead i read political criticism related to French Algerian relationships and a concern for how cultural corruption creates individual moral corruption and individual moral unconsciousness. The bit of allure we find for the stranger is a finger pointing toward our own guilt.
Its a good parallel to American race relations.

Re: Can Mormons answer Death?
fishing again,
The first thing which came to my mind with this thread was a picture on the cover of a recent National Geographic magazine. A slender fellow stood on a four inch ledge mid way up a major Yosemite face. Instead of rope and protection he had a calm serenity looking out into the vast Yosemite valley. The article observes this fellow is starting his personal campaign to climb the major faces as scrambles, no rope, no hardware,no protection, just hands feet and a fast pace up.
I have scrambled enough rock to feel a personal contact with the image. For me however I scramble easy rock only and that is because I realize I am just clumsy enough that I need to avoid serious rock climbing. I still love the beauty of the combination of rock and sky. An awareness of death may suddenly appear and say hello on a mountain side..Dear me if I don't remember that as an invigorating conversation.

I do not believe that anyone can "answer" death. To know if Mormonism answers death, we would have to have a baseline philosophy, teaching or idea that does answer it. There are none, so Mormonism is just another belief system that tries, but can never reach that domain.

What? You got me on ignore? Or is this just more promoting of the bald face lying that this board is dedicated to?
