I get commandments against viewing pornography. What I don't understand is the needless and damaging shaming that is inflicted on young people who, when they masturbate, are doing exactly what evolution or God arranged for the human body to do.

If each part and tag of us is sacred, then wouldn't masturbation be a form of sacrament?

Somehow I get the idea that it all boils down to a simple commandment from the Church priesthood leaders-- that we are not to masturbate.

We took our kids to the Portland Art museum yesterday. In the contemporary building, they all viewed many explicit images, including my favorite, which was a nude female goddess showing a normal, post-pregnancy tummy.

Have you seen the official LDS definition of "porn" on their web site?

"Pornography is any material depicting or describing the human body or sexual conduct in a way that arouses sexual feelings."

This definition relies entirely on the response of the viewer/listener. And that actually makes sense, because if an item doesn't excite someone, it's really no more than the individual dots, pixels, or words that compose it. But the necessarily vague definition makes it impossible to regulate.

If an item does not arouse sexual feelings in a person, it's not pornographic, according to the church, even if it's the most graphic depiction of a sex act that you could imagine.

In fact, I can think of several types of materials that don't give me a thrill at all (they're actually a real turn-off), so by the LDS definition they can't be pornographic. They include bestiality, man-on-man, bondage, rape, pretend violence, sodomy, and many others. On the other hand, a nice picture of the right person in an outfit commonly worn to the gym or the beach (or even a photo of a beautiful face) can be quite enticing.

Therefore, a video of that kind of graphic sex is not "porn," but a photo of my wife in her yoga gear (or a nice portrait) is.

The photo you showed is much sexier (to me) than than a lot of the nudes hanging in European museums that some TBM's (like my parents) find quite embarrassing.

I think that there is educational benefit to virgins (both males and females) masturbating. It allows them to understand their own bodies, which will help them in their sexual health when they get married.

in my opinion, masturbation makes both sexes better lovers.

A boy learns how to control his climax, which is very important as a two pump chump will never satisfy a woman. A man who can maintain an erection as well as possess great staying power will always please his lover.

A girl learns about her responses to heightened arousal as well as how to intensify it which will make sex more enjoyable for her being able to climax both clitorally as well as experience multiple vaginal orgasms, provided she is with a man who has staying power.

Additionally, through masturbation both sexes gain an understanding of what feels best to them and can relate this to their partner. This is especially important for the female. Many men haven't a clue how to engage in manual and oral stimulation of the female genitalia, which when done right will magnify the experience of intercourse for both.

I have read HORROR stories of married Mormon women who go YEARS without ever experiencing an orgasm.

I have close friends and family members who have lived these horror stories, each one (of which I am aware) ending in the divorce of an otherwise TBM couple.
