That's a good point. However, my own parents were democrats before they joined the church and that was decades ago. That was in the ETB era.

I don't live in any of those places. I've heardstories of democratic Mormons before, but in my little circle of Mormons, who live from Florida to AK, they are political bots posting the same predictable memes on Facebook. They are obviously all on the same page. Are they getting it directly from church on Sundays, or from their Heavenly Mother, Sarah Palin?

I don't live in any of those places. I've heardstories of democratic Mormons before, but in my little circle of Mormons, who live from Florida to AK, they are political bots posting the same predictable memes on Facebook. They are obviously all on the same page. Are they getting it directly from church on Sundays, or from their Heavenly Mother, Sarah Palin?

I think this is just the effect of social networking. For example, CaliforniaKid and Kishkumen often share and/or like the same memes/photos on my Facebook, just like my old Army buddies who love Ron Paul (God help me if those twain ever meet).

ETA: George Takei has become the bane of my Facebook existence. I’ve developed a real dislike for him and his cult of followers (I’m lookin’ at you Chris!)

That's actually a very interesting question. I think Conservatism is based in fear of change. People are extremely resistant to change (in general). Dogmas manifested through churches represent a safe harbor for these people. It gives them structure. Rules. A Way of Life.

Life is scary as crap when you think about it. There are no guarantees, and most of the things that happen to you are completely out of your control.

Religion provides mental, emotional, and in some cases physical security. And that's very reassuring to people who are resistant to change. The question is... Why are they resistant to change? What is it about "change" that they fear?

To me it's about lack of control. Change represents a fundamental lack of control, which represents just how powerless the Individual is over the Collective.

But if the Individual is part of the Collective, and the Collective is rigid and relatively uncompromising, then the existential fear of powerlessness is subdued to a certain degree.

That's why people join churches, and in this case the Mormon church. They're looking for structure, comfort, and control to manage their anxiety.

I think the visibility of Democrats/Liberals in Mormon circles often depends on there being a critical mass. If you're the only one in a given situation-- like a Sunday School class where Brother Apocalypse and Sister Subservient are ranting about the "attack on the traditional family", gender roles, abortion rights, the evils of socialism and public assistance, wheat storage and gun control. When you see a chorus of nodding heads, it's hard to speak up, knowing you are without the opportunity to provide substantial context, because it feels like your good name and public perception of your very worthiness is at stake.

It's hard to be willing to sacrifice that if being perceived as a 'rebel' doesn't get you off.

I certainly didn't know there were Mormon Democrats growing up, and I wouldn't have guessed it until they started 'coming out' on Facebook.
