Re: For Zee and anyone else who attends Church to keep the p
Hey Liz,
Thanks for devoting a post to my cause (going back to church with the fam). I'm sorry to say that my iphone is the last thing I want to look at because that is what everyone else is doing and it makes me feel like I'm a zombie (like them). I have never in my life felt more like a zombie than last Sunday. Either that, or I was put into an insane asylum and given a powerful drug that prevented me from thinking. It was awful!
What I need is paper and a pencil and some way to get my mind to think while in the confines of that building. That is the hard part: thinking.
Maybe it means I break out of my shell and actually make a comment in SS or EQ. Maybe it means I go out in the parking lot and scream after each block of the 3 hours. Maybe it means I go into the baptism dressing room and dance disco to "Hot Stuff".
Certainly, I will not sit there and play angry birds and fall asleep. No! I look to the heavens (beyond the bland walls of the building) and beseech thee, my advocate, even the blessed Pallas Athene! Don't look down on me and say your heart is broken! Please counsel with me; hold the night for me. Fly to me. Give me mine helmet and shield, for I am my captain. The arrows fly but deflect them down and spur me onward. Let Boredom die a thousand deaths!

Alas, bcspace has disappeared.
Again.

Are you "required" to pay for missions, or is it just "expected."
I assume that preserve US tax deductions for missionary payments, its merely a "suggested donation" coupled with peer pressure.

This is just a placeholder for my ideas for sketching next week.

This was a bitter-sweet performance and it stirs up many religious feelings in me.
Oh wait, next week is Stake conference! I think this means we get a breather!

Yes families are expected to pay for missions if they have the funds to do so. If not the Church will pay.
The donation for you child serving a mission is to the Church missionary fund. Then the Church send money to the mission to supprot the missionary based on whatever the cost of that mission is. In the US if your child serves you pay $400 per month no matter where they go. By donating to the Church missionary fund you are able to take a tax deduction for the donation.

Could colleges do this? For example, could I make arrangements to make an $80,000 tax-deductible donation to a college with the understanding that by doing so, my kid would get a tax-free scholarship worth $80,000?
It’s relatively easy to agree that only Homo sapiens can speak about things that don’t really exist, and believe six impossible things before breakfast. You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven.

Ha! You don't know me very well if you think I'd pay $12,000 for my son to preach a religion I don't believe in without getting what I want out of the deal.
The same goes for temple weddings. I'm not paying for a temple wedding if I'm not allowed to attend the wedding. My kids all know this.

Of course it is your decision. But your son will get the money from the church. No problem there. But it may be better for you to suck it in and cough it up. And your wife may just give the money anyway. Mothers can do those kind of things.
You knew the rules about temple attendance etc. Bite the bullet and sow harmony and don't be a spoil sport.

Do people know the 'rules' before signing up I wonder?
- Does an 8 year old really have the wherewithall to make a considered decision about secret handshakes and financial committments before saying "Yes Mommy I want to be baptised like Jesus"?
- Does an investigator get informed that, if any of their children go on missions that they will be expected to fund it and an estimate of how much that will cost?
- Is the Church's disciplinary process explained before baptism?
No, the Church tells people as little as possible before trying to commit them to being baptised.
And even less about what goes on in the Temple. You are asked in the Temple to commit to certain things before you have any idea what those certain things are. That's called a con job.
Mr. Toronto knew the rules about temple attendance. He knew about the temple recommend interview and that some are not allowed to attend because of behavior, lack of belief etc. When he was active he most likely went along with it. Now...he is on the other side of the fence and he is crying foul. But the rules are the rules. Suck it up and give the kid a happy mission and in the future, suck it up and give a happy wedding. Be a mench.
