What's sad is that I half-way expect bcspace and ldsfaq to step up and defend this idiot.

Of course, the idiot was simply saying out loud what Ryan's personhood bill tried to sneak in, anyway. And now Ryan is going to have to backpedal once again. lol

If you think about it, Todd Akin's statement shows he actually has much more heart and compassion than Paul Ryan. At least he tried to justify in his mind his position that rape victims should be forced to have the babies of their rapists, by believing in the imaginary female reproductive functionality made up by Dr. John Willke (the "spastic tubes" guy).

It was clearly an effort to assuage his conscience by claiming that rape pregnancies are very rare. Ryan didn't bother with such niceties when he and Akin pushed for a new law that would require rape to be "forcible" for a victim to deserve an abortion, and another that would declare a fertilized egg to be a "person" entitled to 14th amendment protection.

By the way, Ryan's "forcible rape" terminology is what Akin had in mind when he said "legitimate rape."

The Democrats have noting to talk about. No solutions, no record to run on. You'll see this come to the fore at the Democrat Convention when they concentrate on Akin. by the way, Akin's opponent is so disliked he may very well win anyway.

So this isn't worth discussion, eh?

No it isn't. "Legitimate rape" in Akins' mind is a rape that actually happened. At least that's what he has subsequently claimed. One of the "problems" these guys have with allowing rape victims to have abortions is that a woman might lie and say she was raped in order to be allowed to abort. This alleged rape would not be "legitimate".

That all makes sense to that particular kind of mindset. To me what stands out is that a state could exist where a woman having an unwanted pregnancy would have to claim she was friggin raped in order even to be allowed to abort.

Well sure, that too. But the manifestation of force and violence (black eyes, split lips, vaginal tearing, etc.) is what they are looking for as the evidence that it really happened. And I think they are also united in discounting what they called "consensual" rape (statutory, incestuous, etc.) as not legitimate.

One of the "problems" these guys have with allowing rape victims to have abortions is that a woman might lie and say she was raped in order to be allowed to abort.

Yeah, they think certain women are willing to make up just about any lie to get out of a bothersome and inconvenient pregnancy. Ryan made a house speech complaining that allowing abortions for "health of the mother" reasons would allow lying, baby-killing women and their baby-killing accomplice doctors to come up with all kinds of health reasons to finagle an abortion.

It's an incredible level of disrespect, and it's no coincidence that the champions for the cause are almost all men.
