Pinning your mother (Yikes, I mean for Boy Scouts!)

Post by _just me »

Last night I went to a scout court of honor with my son.

It was all fine until the end which got all weird and Mormony.

BUT, my real question is this:

Where did the ritual pinning of the mother's begin and why? How old is that ritual and what is the significance? They also make you kiss your mother audibly and I figure that just was an outgrowth from the pinning ritual itself.

Anyone have the 411?

Don't know when the ritual began.

I was in an "LDS" Cub Scout den in the mid 1950s (Den mother was LDS). And in a real LDS Scout Troop in the 1960s. We did not pin our Mothers.

When my sons were Cub Scouts in the late 80s / early 90s I recall mothers being much more involved than fathers, but do not recall "pinning". Could be wrong, though - wasn't there.

As Boy Scouts, I don't recall any pinning of my wife, either.

We have never lived in Utah.

Is it a Utah thing?

At our Eagle Scout Court of Honor, we had to pin our mothers. Which we all did.

The guy running the show, (the Scout leader?), asked us all to then kiss our mothers because it was they who most likely deserved the actual award. There was a chuckle among the audience.

None of us kissed our mothers. There were about eight of us getting the award that evening. We then walked off the stage with the mothers looking somewhat embarrassed.

The Scout leader then gave us a verbal lashing, which we all shrugged off. I feel a bit ashamed about that now, I must admit.

This was Salt Lake City in the 70s.

At first glance I thought this was going to be a thread about MILFs. :surprised:

I guess I'm relieved.

I love how you clarified your subject line by saying it's just for Boy Scouts, as if that makes it any less perverted.

Pinning, for those who don't understand: When a boy achieves a new rank he gets these tiny little pins. One for his mom and one for himself. He has to pin the mother pin on his mother in front of everyone and then audibly kiss her on the cheek.

I'm in Colorado.

Weddings would be much better with pinning ceremonies. No rings, more pins.

So why isn't the dad being pinned (or does he?)? I played sports so never did scouting.
