Who the hell is Stephen Smoot?
by the way I think that any aspiring apologist should have to post at Mormon Discussions for 250 posts before he calls into question a damned Prof. of Egyptology from Yale. If he can't handle us then he shouldn't be allowed to hatchet out at a real academic.

Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

No doubt. I think it's funny that this brand of apologetics feeds on the paranoid notion that there is a secret cabal in the scientific world to hide, downplay, or lie about potential scientific items that prove the church is true by outright obsfuscation or just lazy and sloppy scholarship. There seems to be a lot of armchair Egyptologists among the FARMS crowd.

Wait wasn't Steve Smoot the physical heir to the cheeks and hair of Josh "Baby Huey" Skains?

Steve Smoot is "rommelater," right? I always thought it was funny that a teenager was considered one of the more serious mopologists on the old MAD board. This must mean he's home from his mission. He'll fit right in with the rest of them.

If I recall correctly he is a recently returned missionary who has studied the Book of Abraham issue quite a bit. He showed this type of rhetoric before going on his mission on the MAD board -- especially when this issue came up.
And I agree with you. Such a person shouldn't so easily dismiss an actual professor of Egyptology -- one recognized as an expert in the field.

I hate to pile on the kid, but with posts like that he is bringing it on himself. I found these old pics from his blog to be pretty funny. He is taking pictures of himself with apologists like they are rock stars.

Fanboys like this were a dime a dozen when I was at BYU in the late 90's. The fact that we are taking note of individuals like Smoot and Hammond exhibiting such sycophantic behavior today says something I think.

Think of it this way. Going to church and paying your tithing doesn't always make you feel important or like you are part of something important. But these guys get to feel like they are defending God's kingdom from evil people like you and me. It's sort of like Civil War re-enactments except the participants actually think they are at war.

I'm trying to decide whether I should be disturbed that Smoot refers to himself as an "undying acolyte" of Brant Gardner. Gardner always struck me as a pretty decent guy -- not at all the sort to surround himself with undead minions.

That's a good take-away, Bret. That and the fact that Kerry Shirts sure has a nice head of hair!

From the looks of these pics, it seems appears that of the criteria of becoming a "rock star" apologist is to have a minimum 45" wasteline and be two steps away from diabetes or bypass surgery.
