Republicans oppose higher-order thinking skills

Post by _beastie »

You know, the skills that children will need to succeed in the global economy...

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyat ... authority/

“We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.”

This pretty much sums up my problems with the current republican party.

They're not opposed to critical thinking per se. Rather they see curriculum under the heading "critical thinking" as a codeword for the dreaded liberal agenda of propagandizing the youth. It's not and it's really just learning how to think and analyze one's ideas, but there you have fundamentalism's slow creep on America. They're afraid of challenge to their beliefs. If you're not aware, because Texas is such a huge market for textbooks, national textbook makers cater to their standards. What your kids learn about in other states is impacted by this stuff. California balances it out to an extent, but not totally because the Texas school board is completed owned by wackjob fundamentalists whereas the opposite isn't the case in California.

Isn't critical thinking the antidote for brainwashing? Now why would anyone want to limit someone's ability to fight brainswashing?

It is increasingly obvious to me that religious, conservative fundamentalists are painfully aware of and resent how old religious dogmas have repeatedly had to yield in past history to the realities discovered by modern, empirical science, and are increasingly desperate to try to put an end to that before any more of their remaining, false dogmas are exposed as such. Thus the virulent, anti-science stance of current, mainstream, Republicans. It really is true that reality has a very strong liberal bias!
No precept or claim is more likely to be false than one that can only be supported by invoking the claim of Divine authority for it--no matter who or what claims such authority.

Bull pucky.....

There is NOTHING anti-science about Republicans other than the liberal Ice Age, now Global Warming, now Climate Change nuts. We are against BAD SCIENCE, not science.

40 years ago the liberal nuts where claiming the world was going to end in 20 years with an Ice Age. Didn't happen. Then the earth started getting hotter because of high Sun Spot activity, so they in their extreme environmentalism blame it on pollution and then it's Global Warming, not due to Sun Spots, but MAN..... Not only that, but the earth was going to end in 10 years, DIDN'T HAPPEN.... Now that the Sun Spots of died down (but they ignore that fact) they now notice the earth is in a cooling stage, so instead of Global Warming, it's now "Climate Change". Hey classic redefinition of words..... Just like back when they were racist Progressives creating Planned Parenthood to eliminate blacks and other "undesirable", Progressive became a bad word, so they adopted the term Liberal which belonged to Freedom loving Libertarians and Conservatives, the values that founded this country. Now Liberal is a bad word, so they try to call themselves "Progressives" again....

Buddy, the things you say about Republicans actually apply to Liberals/Democrats, not Republicans. You've been brainwashed with many lies by liberals.

The real bull pucky is the myth that in the '70s, scientists were predicting a coming ice age. See http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/short ... -myth.html
Of 71 papers published between 1965 and 1979 about climate change, 44 predicted global warming, 20 were neutral and only 7 predicted global cooling. For some reason, the latter are the ones that got all the media publicity. Since then, the evidence has piled up tremendously in favor of global warming to the point that 97 to 98 percent of the world's climate scientists acknowledge that AGW is a real and troubling reality. Global warming, by almost all accounts, is actually proceeding faster than was predicted in the 1990's. This is very well documented on sites like realscience.com, climate crock of the week, and numerous other sites that examine the findings of actual climatologists.

ldsfaq is the posterboy demonstrating why all of us should be concerned about the republican party's bias against critical thinking skills.

I never said "scientists" I said many of the same nuts who predicted global cooling now most promote global warming, or now "climate change".

It's really simple..... You manipulate words. No one doubts that the earth has warmed up a little. What we doubt is your CAUSE.....!!! We intelligent people see their clear correlations because of Sun Spots and other earth cycles, you nuts believe it's caused by pollution. Fact is, is there simply hasn't been ENOUGH pollution to even cause global warming. It's clearly simply the earth's NATURE CYCLE....

Al Gore's "truth" has been proven false on multiple fronts.

Hey guys..... "Greenland" used to be GREEN!!! And not that long ago either!!!

Welcome to the REAL "Climate Change".... It's called the Earth and Sun's NATURAL CYCLE!!!
