I have had numerous vivid dreams of a wide variety. Many have been like yours, and I woke up thinking this had actually happened. I have even dreamed vividly that I can fly, more than once and woke thinking I actually could, though I realized I better not try it.

Yes this could account for what people think are visions, etc.

I had a very vivid dream a few years ago that makes me laugh every time I recall it.

I lived with my sisters in a quaint old house on the top of a high cliff overlooking the ocean. One day, I was in the front yard looking out over the sea when a huge storm blew in. It grew dark and windy and very ominous, and then Jesus appeared in the sky! My only thought in the dream was that: oh, those crazy religious nuts are projecting that image up there to fool people.

I guess I'm a hopeless case. Oh, well.

Years ago I marveled at the vivid dream inducing powers of Halcion. Years later I briefly tried this medication again, but only felt sleepy.

I've heard others describe waking up with the devil choking them unable to move and they're convinced it's real. When realistically it is much more easily explained by sleep paralysis.

I have had sleep paralysis a number of times, mostly as a late teenager. It seemed to me that a vaguely man-shaped evil spirit was sitting on my chest, suffocating me. Classic sleep paralysis.

As far as vivid dreams go, I dream a lot. I'm not sure how vivid you are talking about, but I've had dreams before (though not very recently) that were so real to me that it took me a good minute or two after waking to realize the dream wasn't still happening. I could easily see a person experiencing this while waking from a religiously-themed dream and believe they've experienced a visitation or vision.
Mormonism ceased being a compelling topic for me when I finally came to terms with its transformation from a personality cult into a combination of a real estate company, a SuperPac, and Westboro Baptist Church. - Kishkumen

This thread seems to be evidence against the benefits of eating cheese close to bedtime...

Those were the only ones that for me were truly vivid. I had a lot of realistic sex dreams as a celibate youth, but I could never fully enjoy them, because I would wake up in a panic, convinced that it had really happened. All I could think of was that I had just ruined my life for a momentary (intense) pleasure, having just committed the sin next to murder.
