It has Begun, Anarchy at BYU (link)

A Brigham Young University student has started a campaign to get the school to allow caffeine to be sold on campus, after a recent blog post by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints clarified the church's stance on consumption of the substance.

In a blog post responding to a recent NBC Rock Center special, the LDS church said caffeine is not prohibited by church doctrine.

"Despite what was reported, the Church revelation spelling out health practices (Doctrine and Covenants 89) does not mention the use of caffeine," the post read. "The Church's health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and ‘hot drinks' — taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee."

Re: Obama's speeches, it was true in 2008, it is still true in 2012. Not sure what the problem is.

Re: Caffeine at BYU, I'm trying to remember who actually said it, but someone at BYU, in response to the little hullabaloo about caffeine on campus, said that the reason caffeine isn't sold at BYU is due to a lack of demand for it from the students. The Facebook group is of course attempting to show that that is not true.

I think the church and BYU should resolve the issue once and for all. Come up with a doctrine or principle the church will officially claim and support and then decide their BYU policy on that basis. If the church will stand behind caffeine per se not being against the WoW and left entirely up to the individual to regulate, then drop the pretenses and start selling it at BYU and let the market decide. If the cougareat and the little mini-PX there (is it still there?) end up with large unsold stocks of caffeinated beverages, then we know the BYU students really don't want it and it would be reasonable for them to stop selling it.

As it is, it looks like the church is waffling with the public on its caffeine policy, and that BYU is maintaining it's old school anti-caffeine policy in spite of the church's now-stated official neutrality toward caffeine. It reminds me of Pres. Hinckley saying on TV that the church doesn't teach that God was once a man and that we can become gods, and then at the next conference saying hey, wink wink, I know the doctrine of the church, I'm not backpeddling on any of it.

James Marble, as quoted in the KSL story, wrote:Not all students support the proposed change, including James Marble, who said he believes there is demand for caffeine among students because its effect on the central nervous system can increase mental alertness.

Does this quote strike anyone else as somehow hilarious?

I mean, it has that certain "no crap Sherlock!" flavor to it.

Sorry, but I just need to make sure I'm up to speed on the latest doctrinal developments...

1. Caffeine now okay, despite what Hinckley told the world and
2. Naked shoulders on female under 8's is now a big no no.
3. 'Do not contact' means keep contacting me until I resign.

Okay, got it...carry on.

Sethbag, He just took a play out of the Islamist play book... Lying to a non-believer is not a sin. Don't you know that "some truths are just not very helpful".
