In the UK there are claimed to be 188,000 members.

My ward, considered 'the strongest in the Stake' has less than 25% activity.

If my ward is typical of the UK there are likely 47,000 active members and 141,000 people who are in varying stages of apostasy.

Of the group (more than 20) of youth I grew up with 75% no longer consider themselves Mormons.

The apostasy rate in Sweden is so high that a General Authority had to write a specific letter (Jenson I think) to try and answer some of the issues.

I know only the ward my wife is in.
On the list there are 400+ members.
In the chapel there are 85 chairs. Sometimes 86, sometimes 81 only. All around 80. I've never seen they used up all.
The 25% seems to be the average outside of US.

Did the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints know that members are "leaving in droves?" a woman asked.

"We are aware," said Jensen, according to a tape recording of his unscripted remarks. "And I'm speaking of the 15 men that are above me in the hierarchy of the church. They really do know and they really care," he said.

"My own daughter," he then added, "has come to me and said, 'Dad, why didn't you ever tell me that Joseph Smith was a polygamist?'"

YAY!

I didn't know Holladay was apostate. The Mormons here generally leave us alone. Now I know why. Once in a while I get stale cupcakes left on the porch or a visiting teaching letter. My parents send the missionaries by. It's like clockwork. We have them over for dinner, within the week missionaries show up. It used to rocket me to the moon, I would get so angry. Now it's just eh, whatever. Might sprinkle them with holy water as soon as I open the door next time.

How is it that not one of us remained active in the church?

Free agency.

Is this really what the church intended?

No, its what they chose.

What makes you think, by the way, that just because they are not involved in the Church, they are "apostate"?

Really? I would think that young men and women would want to be with each other, checking each other out and doing things together. Much better than being with old fogeys and married couples.

Wasn't happening in a Church context with the continuing expectation of mission and temple marriage. They were getting lost once they left home plus many are now being raised by inactive and part member families. Many returning missionaries were being lost as well usually to the difficulty of getting married among them. Hence the new format.

We could have them talk to you and then they'd all be apostates, most likely.

The putting-the-young-people-together-so-they-get-married is why I was never interested in a "Singles Ward".

Yet, leaving Mormonism behind at the same time one leaves home is a nice, quiet, way of leaving without all the drama. That's what I did. :)
