One cannot find serious intellectual coherence in the above statement.

Wonderful, serious, and penetrating engagement of my arguments, Krose.

Social liberal, fiscal conservative.

All libertarians are social liberals. Even the subgroup of paleolibertarians with some social conservative views - pro-life, anti-immigration, etc. - overwhelmingly have other social liberal views - drug legalization, robust civil rights, etc. - that make them liberal on balance.

The one group of self-called libertarians that I wouldn't describe as social liberals are the hard-money Christian reconstructionist types like Gary North. It really strains credulity for the OT-style theocracy they desire to be labeled as libertarian, though. They really are just into Von Mises style economics coupled with a patina of anti-federalism because the current government gets in the way of their desire for local, oppressive theocracy.

Probably the most effective piece of libertarian propaganda ever devised was the world's smallest political quiz:

http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz

You'll be hard pressed to find a gathering of libertarians anywhere without some version of that on the table. It necessarily defines libertarianism as being socially liberal and economically conservative, which is how the concept is near universally understood among libertarians and in politically theory. Now there are particular kinds of social liberalism and economic conservatism that are prevalent among libertarians that may differ in other segments, but the general quadrant model holds.

Libertarians are Republicans who also smoke dope (unless you don't inhale, in which case you are a Clinton Democrat). If you follow your blow with a bourbon chaser, you may be a Bush Republican. If you neither smoke nor drink, but have great disdain for the poor, you are probably Mitt Romney (who can go either way depending upon the crowd).

Hope that helps.

In college, the philisophical model the text book taught was as follows:

Liberal Prioritization of American Values:
1- Equality
2- Freedom
3- Order

Conservative Prioritization of American Values:
1- Order
2- Freedom
3- Equality

Libertarrian Prioritization of American Values:
1-Freedom
2- Order and Equality

This model isn’t perfect, but it is coherent and explains why conservatives are in favor of the big-government, anti-freedom things such as their policies regarding drugs, alcohol, prostitution, gays in military, same-sex-marriage, abortion, size of the military, propping-up American-friendly dictatorships, and in general against everything the ACLU would support. Clearly, the conservative movement values the imposition of what I call “order” more than freedom.

Libertarians value freedom more.
