At the very end of the Gore vs. Bush election, the polling indicated a decent shot at Bush winning the popular vote, but losing the electoral college. Going into it, Democrat pundits were preemptively defending the EC system and Republicans were criticizing it. Then, by a hilarious quirk of fate, the exact opposite ended up happening. All the pundits did was flip their scripts. That ossified into the discourse to an extent because of the bitterness over the Gore loss, but that's not to say the script can't flip again. That would be my first expectation in your scenario Krose.

I don't know how reliable it was, but I heard at the time that the Bush lawyers were preparing a legal fight against the Electoral College, based on their anticipation of the opposite result.

I'm just saying that I'm in favor of anything that would motivate us to get rid of it.

I wish the popular vote had more bearing. It's insane to me that the Presidency is over 50 states and yet candidates only seem to visit about 10-20 states during their campaigns. Popular vote where every vote really counts makes me think that voter engagement would be higher and that voter turnout would be higher in general.

I also wish we had a parliamentarian system that allowed for more than two viable political choices.

Some states have an agenda and may also have a large population. Those states would always take sway at the ballet box. I like things to remain as they are.

I must admit, I'm glad I don't live in a swing state. It must be mind-numbing to be subjected to a constant barrage of commercials from both sides. The sad thing is all of this money is being used to influence voters rather than educate voters.

And our gridlock. You need 60 votes to get anything done in the Senate now. Sometimes I think what we need in this country is a third party that is centrist. I actually think a lot of Americans would like a party that isn't controlled by the left or the right.

Every state has an agenda. Should states not look out for their own interests and try to get the best deal/position possible?

Less than 40 days until the election and less than a week until the first debate.

Anyone want to show me a viable map to the White House for Romney that doesn't include him pretty much sweeping all the swing states where Obama currently holds a lead of average polling?

Tossup: 110
Florida-29 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
Ohio-18 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
Colorado- 9 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
Nevada-6 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
New Hampshire-4 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
Iowa-6 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
North Carolina-15 (Romney) (Obama-2008)
Virginia-13 (Obama) (Obama-2008)
Wisconsin-10 (Obama) (2008 - Obama)

Of these states where does Romney look strong except North Carolina (which has swung Obama recently in the polls)?

That or a river in Egypt.

It's not just the bcspaces and Droopys on this board. I work with right wingers who have no doubt Romney is winning in a landslide. Where is the evidence for a landslide? If (IF!) Romney wins it will be a squeaker. I don't see a viable path for Romney to any more than 297 votes. Obama on the other hand could easily take 345 votes (most election predictions I see show Obama taking 332 or 303 if he loses Florida).
