If Quas is willing to bank the first transaction and give us a figure like $500.00 we can replenish it quickly as soon as he gives us the information.

?

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Night, but I'm about a thousand miles from Portland. It might be difficult to get those funds to Darrick. Sounds like Sethbag has a workable plan.

Based on my experience getting my Social Security Disability Insurance approved, if Darrick wants to receive SSI or SSDI, I completely agree he needs to be connected with a caseworker. The application process is daunting for even the most capable, and impossible for many with mental disabilities. The application form itself is voluminous, and collecting and formatting all the required documentation requires the applicant have functional interpersonal, coping, and stress-management skills, as well as a good deal of physical energy. Based on Darrick's behavior on the board, he definitely lacks the first three.

Unless the person has an obvious physical disability, such as paralysis or a missing limb, the SSA automatically declines everyone's first application, even if obvious proof of the disability is provided. Unfortunately, many mentally disabled people are not capable of completing the application process on their own and send in inadequate documentation. Luckily, as long as a doctor confirms the disability, most states will provide the applicant with a caseworker who is trained to understand the limitations of being disabled, and who will help complete the application.

Again, it will most likely be declined, but it still becomes part of the person's SSA record, and the caseworker can then steer the applicant to the next step, which is to get a lawyer. The lawyer takes over the process, and collects and prepares all the necessary documentation to convince a judge the applicant qualifies for disability. I have yet to see a person denied SSDI once a judge has been able to review his/her case. Unfortunately, as long as two years may have passed by the time the person has his/her day in court, and that is a very long time for many with mental disabilities to cope with without help.

The point is, based on what I've see of Darrick's personality, he will definitely need a devoted advocate who understands his disability and how to handle him when he gets difficult, and who knows how to navigate the Social Security system. Many family members and friends naïvely think they can provide that help, only to make things worse when they become overwhelmed by the process; thus, the need for a caseworker. Hopefully, Portland is one of the states that will provide one for Darrick.

My heart breaks for Darrick, and is, almost unbearably, moved by the tenderness people on this board have shown him. The difference between how you view Darrick, as a human being who needs and deserves help despite board conflicts of the past, and how so many Mormons I've personally talked to view those who need government help as someone to be humiliated, is very telling.

Military Section 8 = a discharge because of mental issues

Public Assistance Section 8 = a housing program

Looney bin = a term offensive to those who have had contact with the mental health system.

I am just as sorry as I can be then. Somebody please clue me in on the 100 things you just must never say to keep your PC pants pants up up.

Duly noted. Looked as if the momentum was on you. Glad to see someone step up closer to the scene. We'll wait to hear some particulars then.

Sethpayne, do we need to get on your PM list?

Oops! My very humble appologies to Sethpayne! Called you Sethbag. I'm blaming old age.

The winter can be a living hell for those of us who are bipolar; and that's with the luxuries of a support system, hot showers, therapist, artificial sunlight lamp, and warm bed to sleep in at night. Some demons are nearly impossible to keep at bay when times are good... I really hope he is able to keep them at bay during these tough times.

My heart weeps not only for him, but because his story/situation is far more common than it should be.

Darrick, if by chance you still read this board on occasion: Please stay strong, and don't lose hope. You’ll be back on top in time.

You are kindness personified, Steuss.

No problem Stu. Still working on making contact.

Appreciate all the PMs. Once we are able to contact Derrick we'll figure out the best way to proceed.

Sethpayne-

Please let me know on Facebook when you find something out. I don't hang out here as much as I used to.

Will do, Kish.

I'm having a heck of a time getting a response from the paper. Let me give it one more day and then I may ask for some help calling shelters etc... in the Portland area.

You also might get results if you call the local psych units. They won't say whether he is there, but will probably deliver a message if he is.

Are they just not responding or are they giving you the run around? I'll help wherever I can with making calls. Please let me know.
