Racist: "I voted for Barack because he was black"

My Mom is voting for Romney for the same reason she voted for Reagan.

"He just looks Presidential."

Like he could play the President in a movie. And I've heard the same kinds of things from many of their family and friends. How is that any less racist?

A few black people I work with will vote for him because he is black, and admittedly they know nothing of the issues he stands for. But so what? People vote for stupid reasons on both sides all the time. In fact most Republicans I know cannot come up with a single legitimate reason to vote for Romney. He stands for nothing and when asked he can't explain how his budget works or how he plans to stop insurance companies from rejecting people due to preexisting conditions, etc. When it comes to the details of his nonsensical plans, he tells us to just wait until after the election for details. In the meantime just trust him. The same guy who refuses to come clean on his tax returns after insisting his political opponents had to produce them or else they were hiding something!

The main reason some people vote black due to color is because their life experience has taught them not to trust white people. So what? It isn't like Sam Jackson's reasons are the same for everyone else.

I would not vote for Democrats because their party was founded on a racist platform, they support abortion for the poor, they think they know best how to spend taxpayer money, and they want marriage to be about sexual fetishes.

It was founded on an abolitionist platform. There would have been no Civil Rights Act of 1964 without the overwhelming support of congressional and Senate Republicans.

They support no such thing, nor are contraceptives - for anyone - in any sense a "right" the federal government must protect, let alone provide.

The first Republican party platform advocated a free soil stance, not abolitionism. In other words, it favored preventing the spread of slavery to any of the territories, but did not argue for abolition within the slave states. Many Republicans at that time, including Lincoln, advocated racial segregation. Recolonization of slaves to Africa was a popular policy proposal from Republicans, including Lincoln. That view is why Liberia exists. This is a view that is somewhat more racist than the modern KKK's on race relations.

On another note, this bit is included in the 1856 platform:

Resolved that the Constitution confers upon Congress sovereign powers over the Territories of the United States for their government; and that in the exercise of this power, it is both the right and the imperative duty of Congress to prohibit in the Territories those twin relics of barbarism--Polygamy, and Slavery.

I wonder what that is in reference to. I can see why a Mormon would argue for basing their allegiance to modern political parties based on what they advocated at their founding, even if it has undergone radical evolution since that time. As we can see, Mormonism and Republicans were in total harmony during antebellum.
