What You Love and What You Would Change!

Post by _Ceeboo »

Hello good people

If you would be so kind, let's shelve our collective differences and varying perspectives about the truth claims of Mormonism.

With that resting nicely on the shelf, I was hoping to learn your personal opinions/thoughts about a couple of things.

What do you like/admire/enjoy most about Mormonism?

If you could change one thing about Mormonism, what would it be?

Thanks in advance for sharing with me/us.

Peace,

Okay!

Sure, I would be glad to give them to you.

Other than Mormon's, I would say that I really like the teaching of being sealed to your loved ones for all eternity (Way cool, in my opinion)

If you could change one thing about Mormonism, what would it be?

That's a tough question for me but near the top of my 'things to change' list would be the (in my opinion) obvious exclusion of loved ones at Temple Weddings. From my view, this seems to be extremely divisive, painful, and heart wrenching on many levels.

Thanks in advance for sharing with me/us.

Pleasure!

Hello Ceeboo,

Mine is a tough one because that which makes it admirable is also what I would change. Here is what I mean.

I grew up in a wonderful LDS family and community. It was a near perfect childhood. The sense of belonging and shared memories that continue to this day for me are what I love. Even though my children are now grown and mostly gone ,I continue to have meaningful encounters with members in my local church that I enjoy and look forward to. I think this sense of community is a direct result of the us vs them mentality that was/is a large part of how Mormons view themselves. (Also part of the reason I find the "We are Mormons. just like anyone else" campaign disturbing- I have never felt Mormons were just like everyone else.)

What I would change would probably lessen this us vs them perception. I would like to see the Church open to diverse opinions. I would love to be able to attend Church where members felt free to discuss both the positive and negative issues that are part of the religion. (Personally I would really like to be involved in a in real life discussion group regarding Church History where expressing an opinion was not always seen as an attack or a defense of the institution.)
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

I would like to see the Church be as honest and open as it requires its members to be...

Ceeboo, what qualities or attributes, in your opinion, only exist in Mormonism and no where else?

What proprietory truths or attributes do Mormons possess that no other does?

I definitely like certain attributes found in Mormonism, as are found in other non-Mormons.

Sorry, nothing, absolutely nothing "good" of Mormonism is exclusive to Mormonism.

I like baseball and apple pie. Is that Mormon?

None.

Me too.

Please don't be sorry.
I appreciate your contribution.

Hey Ceebs,

I've been meaning to reply but have been super busy lately. I'm sure I could come up with a list of things but instead, I will tell you of just one. This was the first thing that came to mind.

Ether 12:27

"...I [will] make weak things become strong..."

This impacted (still impacts) me in many good ways.

Is it Mormon? [shrug]

Hello Ceebo!

Call me crazy but one of the things I like about Mormonism is the idea that we could become like God. I guess if you believe in eternal life, you might as well spend it as a God.

What I would change is the emphasis on obedience to the leadership. Especially over trivial things like the number of earrings. Overall I think a NOMish perspective would be much healthier for the members. Let people make more of their own choices.

Oh, and my fav thing: many gods. I love that Mormonism has Jesus, Heavenly Mother (and her husband), the Holy Ghost, Abraham, and many others up there on the status of God. This, by far, is the best thing about Mormonism!
