He was talking about his sons at the time, no?
Funny, but that is where I tuned in. Only saw about a minute. Who won?

Yeah, he was calling his sons liars. The consensus seems to be gelling that Romney won the debate. But I predict that in the coming days the focus will shift to his promise to kill Big Bird. When the Daily Show and SNL get a hold of it, that will be what people remember about this debate.

He made no such promise. What he'll do is make Big Bird earn his way through life instead of being dependent on tax payer funding.

What I will remember is how disengaged and almost bored the president seemed. That was by far the worst debate performance for a sitting president that I've seen in a long time, maybe since Bush '92. Unfortunately, the presidential debates always turn on catch-phrases, a specific high or low point, or the demeanor of the debaters. Neither candidate had a repeatable line or significant moment, though the Big Bird statement came close.

In that case, the debate hinged on who seemed prepared and comfortable. And that was not Obama. The Washington Post even criticized him for smirking, a crime we've not seen since W.

Wishful thinking. Romney won by a landslide. And the Ryan/Biden debate is going to be a slaughter.

I think Andrew Sullivan had it right:

10.29 pm. How is Obama's closing statement so damned sad, confused and lame? He choked. He lost. He may even have lost the election tonight.

10.31 pm. Look: you know how much I love the guy, and you know how much of a high information viewer I am, and I can see the logic of some of Obama's meandering, weak, professorial arguments. But this was a disaster for the president for the key people he needs to reach, and his effete, wonkish lectures may have jolted a lot of independents into giving Romney a second look.

Obama looked tired, even bored; he kept looking down; he had no crisp statements of passion or argument; he wasn't there. He was entirely defensive, which may have been the strategy. But it was the wrong strategy. At the wrong moment.

The person with authority on that stage was Romney - offered it by one of the lamest moderators ever, and seized with relish. This was Romney the salesman. And my gut tells me he sold a few voters on a change tonight. It's beyond depressing. But it's true.

That was truly a debacle. I honestly can't remember a presidential debate that was won so convincingly (although I have only been watching them since 1992). Romney was in a deep hole and I don't know if that was enough to get him out, but it certainly has changed the media narrative today.

If nothing else, Stephanie Cutter's near-panic after the debate was telling:

My wife turned to me and said, "Wow, she looks completely freaked out and a little pissed at Obama."
