Re: Unemployment drops to 7.8%
lol. well, Kevin, I do hope you swing by more often to drop news items like these to counteract Droopy, BCSpace, The Brackite, and ldsfaqs.
The irony is that these folks may very well consider an unemployment drop to be detrimental to the economy. More people going to work means more cars on the road.
...I was just going to leave it that, but I'd better spell it out. More cars on the road means greater demand for gas, which, all other things being equal, translates to higher gas prices as more people compete for the same amount of resources.
Well, we all know how market competition works, as we receive at least seventy-five sermons a year from Droopy on the subject, but concrete examples can often help us grasp the theory.
By the way, where is Droopy? Since a few more folks have been posting in these threads than usual, he seems to have disappeared.

Re: Unemployment drops to 7.8%
A drop in unemployment without the creation of new jobs just means more people have stopped looking for employment. So was there a huge number of new jobs created?
I must admit I am tired of politics........ I prefer Book of Abraham threads from Mr Kevin.

Re: Unemployment drops to 7.8%
Workforce participation is probably a better indicator of what's going on in the economy. I'm quite happy it ticked up .1% in September, but it's still trending in the wrong direction. We've had a couple of upticks this year, but the trend is still down.

Do I blame the president? No. Do I hope for bad economic numbers so he'll have a harder time getting re-elected? No. People are suffering, not just in the US but all over the world, from this terrible economic slump. Trying to pin things on who is in the White House is a fool's errand.

All they are counting is the drop in people collecting unemployment benifits ---- is this not true? By the way, how is that job on trash truck detail going ---- I'm doing ok here at Mac Donalds...

Bob any idea how the retirement of Boomers (which is now beginning to get into full swing) will effect this percentage?

I'll have to look for it, but I heard on NPR a while back that workforce participation among senior citizens is actually up, not down, because the Wall Street collapse made it impossible for them to retire.
