Post by _sock puppet »

Cafeteria, picking and choosing, Mormonism principles will lead to "a lot of long nights and empty nets".

What does that mean?

He never really explained the metaphor. Gaging from the talk, I think he meant that if you cherry pick, you will not live a truly happy life, and you do not truly love the Lord.

This vague warning actually sounds sensible to me.

You are better off rejecting the whole steaming pile instead of picking through for nuggets of truth. Wash yourself clean and start over fresh. Anything that is true in Mormonism can be found outside Mormonism too.

Oh, that's obviously true.

It can be quite similar to picking a favorite apostle over one who's words you don't like when both apostles believe and teach the same doctrine.

Whilst on LDS.org it comes across that it's okay from members to be 'cafeteria ' in nature...

“Members of the Church vary in their levels of participation or belief."
“We look to not only the spiritual but also the temporal, and we believe that a person who is impoverished temporally cannot blossom spiritually.”

Sensible advice and so very true.

In my mind, NoM's are some of the healthiest Mormons emotionally; they like aspects of Mormonism, but have moved beyond the fear mongering and being controlled.

The NoM's are probably the biggest thorn for the leadership. They exists within the ranks, but are assimilated so well that they are hard to spot...and they aren't going to be full believers ever again.

Kind of like a tare that you cannot separate from the wheat.
