FAIR responds to MormonThink

Post by _SteelHead »

It is better to be a warrior in a garden, than a gardener at war.

Some of us, on the other hand, actually prefer a religion that includes some type of correlation with reality.

what do you get when you cross and elephant with a rhino?

(same answer as the answer to the question above)

This is probably a little off topic but while reading the article I tried clicking on one of the MormonThink links and was sent to this page. http://en.fairmormon.org/No_links_to_critical_websites. Maybe I've noticed this before but it bothered me this time. Let me read both sides and let me make up my own mind. I don't just want your version of things.
How can you say you don't hide anything while engaging in policies like this?

As posted on RFM: http://exmormon.org/phorum/read.php?2,669822

FAIR helped make MT what it is today

MormonThink was largely obscure until FAIR came along. First they mentioned it in one of their FAIR conferences and MT hits doubled. They then made it the only website 'worthy of a FAIR review' (they did John Dehlin's also but took it off when he complained) - hits went way up after that also.

Then they got into a war with us about the translation process and MT hits continued to go up as readers tuned in.

Then they upped the stakes and started outing the MT contributors that they could find and reporting them to the church. Well, hits exploded after MT hit the media. I saw it on dozens of media outlets, on ABC News, etc. Reporters wrote and called constantly. We now have a large list of media contacts ready at our disposal whenever FAIR wants to publicize MT again.

Hits topped about 3 Million last month and have stayed at a consistant double what they were just two months ago - thanks to FAIR. They are pacing at a steady 70,000 hits per day now.

We've had literally hundreds and hundreds of emails sent to us since the story prompted by Scott Gordon of FAIR hit the presses. Many of those emails were from people that just found out about MormonThink for the first time after reading about all the hub-bub on the Internet. These people were not happy that the church kept so much of its disturbing history from them and they thanked us for providing all this information in one, easy-to-find place.

We've got many offers to help improve the site by Internet developers. Also many active, but questioning members, want to join the team.

Donations are at an all-time high so now we can fund more projects to help the site.

And all of this is due to you FAIR. Thank you so much for not ignoring us. We couldn't afford any better publicity than you give us. Please keep it up.

sincerely

My favorite part is within the High Level Summary. The Accuracy assessment is "Conclusions drawn are predominantly negative toward the truth claims of the Church.". Cleverly or accidentally that assessment doesn't actually tell readers anything about the accuracy of mormonthink.com's claims.

My goodness. They really say this:

FAIR does not provide hyperlinks to critical or anti-Mormon websites

FAIR is committed to collecting accurate and complete data on criticisms of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormons").

We also attempt to collect and reference all sources of a criticism or attack upon the Church, its leaders, or doctrines.

By FAIR policy, however, we do not link directly to critical or anti-Mormon websites. If you have reached this page, you likely clicked on a URL provided for reference which refers to a hostile, critical, or anti-Mormon website.

The URL in the text allows the user to find the referenced site if desired by copying and pasting. Push the "Back" button on your browser to return to the link that brought you here.

Is there any way of disagreeing with the claims of the CoJCoLDS that would not be counted as "hostile, critical, or anti-Mormon"? Somehow I think not.
Zadok:
I did not have a faith crisis. I discovered that the Church was having a truth crisis.
Maksutov:
That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

That's really odd. Is there a substantive difference in not linking but showing the address? Anyway, Jesus is a step ahead of them. He, I'm sure of it, inspired Google's Chrome team to include the "go to" right-click option.
