Illuminating Analysis of new YM/YW Manuals
If you are one that preaches that the Church has made significant progress in the area of women's rights and gender roles generally, then this side-by-side analysis of the brand new manuals should make you reconsider your position.
Personally, this made me nauseous.

I think most rational people would reject the premise that any progress at all in those areas vis a vis the LDS Church needs to be made in the first place.

Wow. I wonder why females need to be reminded about "gender" so much and have it reinforced.....

"Rational people" see a male dominated religious society trying to maintain control through youthful indoctrination. Make sure Susie is raised to believe God wants her to be an incubator and leave all that leadership stuff to the boys.

Why do the guys get a hammer and nail while the girls only get a pencil and paper?

Ya, that's *exactly* what most rational people would think...

Wow! Can you believe the YW manual recommends reading that train-wreck of a talk by Julie Beck, "Mothers Who Know"?

The introduction of the Personal Progress Report was the first maneuver in the post Correlation re-entrenchment of rigidly constrained and gendered spheres in Mormon culture. Prior to this, MIA girls earned bandlo merit badges for all manner of accomplishment; sure there were awards for scripture study and the like, but also photography, scholarship, art, handicrafts and clothing design. Marriage (and the goal of a temple marriage) was of course present, but it existed side by side with a range of human accomplishment not subordinated to or necessarily connected to it.
I would love to find a copy of the first edition of the PPR. I'm not sure mine still exists somewhere in my parent's vast archives (the basement). I'd really like to look over the document that helped persuade me that I needed to seek my intellectual, spiritual and human growth elsewhere...
