Isn't this just a given? Do NOMs actually expect to receive a full eternal reward by skirting major beliefs and requirements? That God will just beat them with a few stripes etc. and then they can just waltz in?
What you, Holland, and FAIR don't seem to understand is most NOMs don't believe in the eternal reward the way orthodox LDS view it. So no, they are not expecting to be "slackers" who will get beat with a few stripes and enter the CK. They just don't believe in it. Personally, I fit NOMs into 2 categories.
1. People who may have grown up LDS, are spiritual, but no longer buy the LDS doctrine. They don't believe it. They view it more like a philosophy. However, they draw strength and comfort from the culture and some of the concepts and doctrines. They view the Book of Mormon as man made, but find it as an uplifting book of allegories. They enjoy the hymns and rituals, but again don't take them literally. The church is their security blanket even though they don't take an orthodox approach.
2. People that no longer believe in the LDS faith and would leave in a heart beat, but can't due to extreme social upheaval i.e spouse leaves them, family disowns them, or their career is negatively effected. These NOMs are there to keep the peace and maintain their quality of life. They may begrudgingly pay tithing and attend meetings every week because the alternative isn't worth it for them.
Either way, NOMs should be allowed to participate and Should be left alone since they harm no one. They are hardly the wolves in sheep's clothing the Mopologist clowns try to paint them as.
Tapirs... Yeah... That's the ticket!
