Okay, if their earlier returns look much like 2010 and 2011, how would those documents provide any more ammunition to attack them? The fact that he has been paying a very low rate has already been thoroughly covered, and we all assume he paid the same low rate in previous years. That wouldn't be news to anyone.

No, there has to be something in those tax forms that would be extremely damaging (possibly disqualifying), because he is willing to pay the political price for being secretive and defying the established precedent for candidates, just to keep them hidden.

The speculation with the most credibility is that he must have taken advantage of the 2009 amnesty for income hidden in Swiss accounts, to avoid prosecution for tax fraud. That would explain why he won't go back past 2010.

Ann Romney said that releasing more details on the family's taxes would merely give the Obama campaign "more ammunition." The Romneys' wealth is rumored to be as much as $250 million, and since much of Mitt Romney's earnings come from investments, he would pay a lower effective tax rate than many lesser-off Americans. But as for whether the campaign is trying to withhold embarrassing information, Ann Romney told NBC "there's nothing we're hiding."

All she said was releasing the returns would give their enemies more fodder. She certainly knows that they returns are complicated and the criticism for their legally low rate was already being hammered.

Now lest Kevin cry foul by me an accuse me of not being fair and looking at all sides of things I will say I agree that Romney should release more tax returns. But his wife did not admit there was something amiss.

She said 'more ammunition'.
That could mean 'more of the same ammunition' but that could hardy be considered harmful. It is more likely she meant 'more ammunition' in addition.
But how can we trust the word of a woman that doesn't live up to her stated covenants...(cheap shot, yeah I know)
