If I did not fervently believe these things to be true, why would anyone care to study what I was teaching? In order to understand Caesar, we must love Caesar and the deeds of Caesar, and not criticize Caesar in such a way that we fail to praise adequately his legacy, thereby instilling in young hearts a deep passion to emulate Caesar in every way.

Anything else is weak and unworthy of notice.

Hail, Caesar!

I'll say it again: the MI people consistently act like middle-school kids who have been pushed out of the popular crowd.

If I was to wake up and find myself a teacher of classics, the class I'd teach with most conviction would be the life of the emperor Caligula. That really resonates with me: I like to have people acknowledge me as a deity - which I am, as you can see from the note on the left - and I have this really cool horse, who would certainly make a contribution to political life to equal that of any senator at present in office.

But (sigh) I am elsewhere and other ...

That is especially rich coming from Hamblin. Things may have changed in the last 15 years, but back then he was one of the least "liked" professors by history majors. He would show up the first day of class and announce that his goal that first day was to get as many people to drop as possible.

I don't think Cicero would agree with that sentiment.

Of course, while Cicero lamented the fact that we was left out of the "Ides of March" conspiracy, he was too blind to see that the young upstart Octavian would be much worse.

You pointy-headed BBC elitists forgot the great Jay Robinson. Now there's a Caligula!

Thank you for broadening our minds, there, hans.

I don't know that I would call Bob Guccione's Caligula high brow stuff, though. (I did include a clip from that film.)

Guccione? I could have sworn that was Emlyn Williams. Oh, well.

From Demetrius and the Gladiators, via tvtropes.org:

Caligula: Do you see her, Claudius? The Goddess Diana. Every night she comes to me... to my arms. There... there she goes. Now do you see her?
Claudius: No, sire.
Caligula: Why not?!
Claudius: Only you gods are privileged to see each other.
Caligula: ... Of course.
