Too many calls for the pioneers to repent

Post by _zeezrom »

Did it ever amaze you (as believing members) how often God would chastise his followers for things that just didn't seem to need repenting of? You see it all over in the Doctrine and Covenants. "Wait," I said as I flipped through the book. "It was hard enough just trying to thrive in the frontier. Now, they need to repent? Boy, I'm in serious trouble cuz I've done worse things than that."

Joseph Smith must repent or lose the ability to translate?
Joseph needs to repent and stop yielding to persuasions?
This Edward Partridge guy is not justified and must repent? K. Whatever.
This Ezra Thayer must also repent?
And William E. McLellin, neither with my servant Sidney Gilbert? Them too? Jeez!

That always surprised me as a TBM.

when you piss off a "prophet" or upbraid him for his lifestyle or personality traits, he will call you to repentance everytime using the Ace in the hole card that there is an angel with a sword (or porter rockwell with a gun) just around the corner of the next building.

just sayin

The call for repentance for me, brings images of crazy folk, the traveling Bible salesmen of the western frontier or the nut jobs of modern times with placards, washboards and soap boxes.

But on a personal level, it is even more patronising, Like going to your Bishop and telling him you have read the scriptures and think they are full of crap and that God does not answer prayers

and he tells you to try and think what you did to lose the Holy Ghost, to repent,
read, ponder and pray about it.

Genius!

And those names mentioned in the OP?

God restored the gospel and brought prophets back to earth... for this? It's not even parable. It's "Mr jones over in the Crescent 3rd ward screwed up. Attention all mortals. This random guy needs to repent."

Just weird.

Too often the call for repentance is/was used in conjunction with a failed prediction or prophecy.

"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

All through the "mouthpiece" of Joseph Smith. Seemingly much of it as a manipulative strategy for J.S. to accomplish some means. Notice how since J.S. died, that all those revelations have stopped.

It is like God died with Joseph Smith. God has gone Awol.

Retracted Comment, God bless the Mormons and the other Christians here that dislike Atheists!
