Yes! Oh, unless he was telling ad hoc stories to coincide with his evolving ideas about religion. And unless he didn't expect anyone to remember that he had told different stories before. And unless memorizing a passage of written prose is not the same as remembering a life-changing theophany that you claim to have experienced.

It is a shame that Emma was not willing or able to be more honest about Joseph later in her life. I completely understand why and I am not being critical of Emma. It's just unfortunate.

But we do know that Emma did love Joseph and they shared beautiful letters to each other. When joseph was murdered along with his brother, she was deeply hurt and felt the loss dearly. And she considered Joseph to be a prophet and taught her children from the Book of Mormon.
