Good point. Why are members asked to vote without first being given sufficient information on which to form a judgment?
The 'vote' is not a vote of approval, it is a vote of agreement to support. I have not seen an example of someone voting against and the person not therefore getting the office they were 'called' to.
The members vote in the affirmative out if relief that they haven't been asked to do it.

Boy, if that ain't the truth!
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
I have seen a situation where a vote in the negative was made. My Dad was the Young Men's President, and when the Bishop was reading a list of confirmations for presidencies in the quorum, he got the wrong name of one of the counselors for the Teacher's Quorum.
My Dad knew that the wrong person had been read, and rose his hand to oppose. It was taken care of, and the correct name was presented to the congregation at the next Sacrament Meeting.

Well, so much for "discernment" ....

by the way I don't either, after all I was married to my ex-wife for 17 years.
