Well, as a liberal I of course am opposed to the tax cuts that had the most impact on the very wealthy without much apparent benefit to the rest of us, but that is more debatable than the point I was trying to make. Yes, the derivative and housing bubble were significant contributors to the crash, and Hubbard supported them. That means he was wrong about the very thing that caused an economic meltdown. You seriously don't see this is a problem? That's hardly an insignificant miss.

Yep is was a big miss. I wonder how many other intelligent people missed it. I am not sure that means the guy is an idiot or incompetent. But I do not know enough about his other views to decide.

There were people in and out of the financial industry that saw what was happening and tried to raise the warning, but no one would listen to them (they were even ridiculed). This page has a good summary of who some of these people were:

http://investorhome.com/predicted.htm

They very clearly explained/warned what was happening during the housing bubble, and predicted what would happen within a few years. It would be most encouraging of the President (Obama or Romney) were being influenced by some of these voices, since they continue to see the problems with our current mishandling of the post-bubble economy and the problems that lie ahead.

There were plenty of people who were smart enough to see the problem, but they just didn't want to. The same thing continues to happen today; our country faces several problems that are obvious to see, with a predictably inevitable impact looming in the future, but people don't want to see the problem or deal with it, so we just pretend it isn't a problem or that it will be solved at a later date.
