I could have mentioned how the ancients believed that their gods and goddesses would unleash punishment on the pagans if the pagans would be acting out of step.

God is god and gods and goddesses are gods and goddesses. And they act accordingly.

And things are no different today in that regard. Everyone believes they are the chosen people of their tribal god who will smite their enemies.

As an attorney, he would likely have some excellent insight in that regard. I wouldn't do it with any intention to put the book in a bad light but rather to ask him whether he thinks Nephi was justified in doing the deed.

I'm not sure Laban's too chuffed with the God of Lehi...

Were the lamanites black? If I remember correctly, it were the 'whites' that got wiped out. Why doesn't god like white people?

Well, God first wiped out the Nephite people who are described as "white and delightsome". Before allowing the Lamanites, whom he had cursed with "a skin of blackness" to dwindle in unbelief. Before allowing the Spanish etc to bring black skinned slaves to America where God could ban them from the Priesthood (although we don't know why He did that).

It seems God really doesn't like anybody...

He seems to really like old white guys who are somewhat interrelated, go figure.

Only if Consig wears the two piece Jesus jammies.

The old one piece Jesus jammie jumpsuit would kill the mood.

To be clear, the reason I like the OP so much is that the Book of Mormon sale was not there. How refreshing.

You have captured for me what it was that made this encounter so strange.

Here I was bent on not doing a Book of Mormon sale.

And yet, my friend kept asking me pointed and direct questions eliciting the very sale I was trying to not make.

This experience may end up being featured in fast and testimony meeting Sunday.

All the Best!

As a follow-up, maybe you could give him a book that has something to do with the teachings of the modern LDS Church.

A Marvelous Work and a Wonder was very helpful to me shortly after I joined the church, and I still think it the best introduction to Mormon beliefs.

Richards was an interesting writer (and speaker) and at least it didn't come across as having been written by a committee laboring under strict scrutiny by another committee.

Not that I'm saying anything bad about Gospel Principles, mind you.

Other than it stinks on ice.

But my friend has made it clear he is most interested in foundational scriptures rather than subsequent efforts to correlate and explicate.

Which really is a pretty worthy attitude, I think.

All the Best!
