The Book of Mormon

Near the end of my stint as a TBM, the Book of Mormon got a new subtitle, "Another Testament of Jesus Christ".

There were already 4: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. 3rd Nephi added a 5th, but did not add anything new about the character or teachings of JC.

The Book of Mormon is cited as significant for the fact it shows that JC also visited people in the Americas. So? That's only significant if it was important the JC visited everyone on earth. Didn't do that, either in the Eastern or Western Hemispheres.

Others say that they find spirituality from reading the Book of Mormon. Do they not find that same spirituality from reading the New Testament, much more of which is devoted to JC?

When I took a step back from Mormonism, it became clear that it is an aberration of Christianity. JSJr needed something different than the existing ministers already had, such as the Bible. His prop was the Book of Mormon. It just seems like Cliff Notes for the Bible. To cop a phrase used by Droopy, with the Book of Mormon, "Nothing new to see here. Move along."

Oh, I too find that the Book of Mormon is somewhat easier to read than the Bible, but the Book of Mormon is nevertheless more tedious for me to read than the KJV Bible. A tediousness also found in the D&C and PoGP.

But the Book of Mormon is not as easy a read for me as the NIV Bible.

I like the little red wagon of my youth (tucked away in my father's attic), but I don't want to retire my SUV and begin using the LRW for transportation now that I have options. The Book of Mormon is a relic of my youth, I get a bit nostalgic for my TBM youth when I happen to see one of the blue paperbacks with gold embossed title and subtitle, and Moroni blowing his horn. But I also know that it as best a more readable knock-off of the Bible. Nothing more.

As a missionary, I would proclaim that the book contained the simple truths, unencumbered by apostate translators.

The next morning, I would begin my reading of the war chapters and wonder, "How are these simple truths?"

Oh, but there are many teachings in the Book of Mormon that can be useful. Two that come to mind:

1. Distribution of wealth and flat class structure
2. Burying weapons of war

Very anti-American, but very meaningful at the same time.
