Maybe you can clear this up for me Sock Puppet and/or lulu.
If KM prevails in the Utah State Supreme court, does this create a ruling that will allow others to sue the Mormon Church for Bishop's failing to us the highly publicized Help Line?

In UT yes and other states might follow it too. That's why they're fighting so hard rather than just stepping up and doing the right thing.

OH, that is why the Mormon Church is saying that if the Supreme Court rules in KM's favor they will shut down the Help Line.

But they can't shut down the hotline, that's just a bluff. The hotline is the only way they can try and get untrained clergy to do the right thing thus cutting down on the # of cases they have to pay out on.
When the church starts holding high counsel courts for bishops who violate the CHI and local law re child abuse reporting, that's when you'll know the church has finally gotten serious about it.

Legal fights are often not zero sum games--the loss to one side is of equal measure to the gain to the other. More often, as here, KM stands to gain a very small amount relative to what the LDS Church has to lose. Thus, the resources marshaled by the LDS Church to fight KM's suit no doubt dwarf KM's resources, but that does not mean that the LDS Church is putting too much into defending this case--it has much, much more to lose than KM might gain.
This disparity of the stakes is often at play it tax litigation with the IRS.
One of the great things about our legal system however, is that a sole practitioner that believes in a case often provides better representation than provided by a bevy of five or six lawyers from a blue chip firm sporting 80 lawyers on its marquis.

Yes, I did notice that at first the only law firm was Christensen and Jensen a relatively small firm (about 26 lawyers plus staff), but when push came to shove, Kirton McConkie (with 100+ lawyers plus staff) suddenly became co-council. I also noted that it is Kirton McConkie who mans the HELP LINE.

I thought it was odd that the Church used Christensen and Jensen at all since Kirton is the Church's go-to firm.

Maybe the Mormon Church didn't see the lawsuit as a real threat.

Maybe the possibility Kirton McConkie might have a conflict of interest existed early on in the litigation, so C&J started the defense. Later, Kirton McConkie joined in after the possible conflict of interest cleared up.
If not already explored, the plaintiff's attorney might want to dig into what involvement that Kirton McConkie had (if any) that might have led to the B Team (C&J) beginning the defense. It may be that Bishop Walker was claiming he had called the Hot Line, and Kirton McConkie was involved in the early reporting of the KM sex abuse.
Don't have any idea if Kirton McConkie was, just saying it would be worth checking into.

Just another Question for Sock Puppet and/or lulu
What happens now? Does KM get to reply to the Mormon Church's brief? How long does it take for a State Supreme Court to rule on a case?
