I wonder what the results of a move toward mainstream acceptance will be? Will we lose our cultural identity which seems so dependent on victim status? When we no longer see ourselves in the 'us vs them' paradigm, will being Mormon be less important, less unique, less Christ's only true Church on this earth?

Ironically when Prop 8 passed and the Church took a huge PR hit, members saw it as a victory and God's will. Now that Romney has lost but the Church came out looking good, members see it as a positive thing and God's will.

I am thinking that had Romney won and the nation collapsed during his administration it would still be God's will.

Johanna Brooks in this article I think misrepresents the Reed Smoot situation.

“It’s a historic moment for Mormons,” said Joanna Brooks, chairwoman of the English department at San Diego State University and author of “The Book of Mormon Girl: A Memoir of American Faith.”

“Just over a century ago, there was a four-year show trial in the nation’s capital about whether Senator Reed Smoot from the state of Utah was fit to serve in Congress because he was Mormon,” she said. “We’ve just come through a general election in which Romney’s faith played virtually no public role.”

Reed wasn't just a Mormon he was an apostle. In a time where church leaders were practicing polygamy secretly and violating federal laws.
You can argue whether or not such a hearing should be held under those conditions, but saying it happened 'because he was a Mormon' is not an accurate description.

2. How did something like this get published in the NYT? (Someone there must be feeling extremely charitable.)

3. I found the underlined portion of this passage particularly ill-advised.

On Wednesday morning, his disappointment was palpable. Still, he felt that even though Mr. Romney had lost, the church, which remained assiduously neutral in the race, had won.
