Twinkies may not last forever after all.
Hostess Brands Inc., which makes Ding Dongs, Wonder Bread and other snacks, filed a motion Friday with U.S. Bankruptcy Court seeking permission to shutter its operations. The move comes after the company said striking workers across the country crippled its ability to maintain production.
The closing would mean the loss of about 18,500 jobs. The company said employees at its 33 factories were sent home and operations suspended Friday and its roughly 500 bakery outlet stores will stay open for several days to sell remaining products.
Hostess CEO Greg Rayburn said in an interview that there was no buyer waiting to buy the company. But without giving details, he said that there has been interest in some of its 30 brands, which include Dolly Madison, Drake's and Nature's Pride snacks.
Rayburn said the financial impact of the strike makes it too late to save the company even if workers have a change of heart. That's because the company was operating on thin margins and stalling production meant the loss of critical sales.

I worked at the Provo Hostess store and distribution center in 1990 for over a year. It was a great job. It paid $8.00 at the time (great wages for Provo), and the hours perfectly suited my college class schedule.
I would drive around in the small Hostess van and make sure the product was on the shelves. It was such an easy job and so flexible. I saved enough to buy my first car -- a 1979 Jeep CJ-7 with 33' tires -- and of course pay for my college courses.
Towards the end, management then mandated that workers (like me) wear a uniform -- well, F-the man! I wasn't wearing no stinkin' lame uniform. I was a college kid who wanted to look good for the babes.
So, I would have my "street" clothes in the van and right after I drove out of the parking lot, I would pull into the nearest clear opening and change back into my clothes. Of course, it was a real pain in the arse when I would get paged to return and pick up some product or something. I was always changing in and out of clothes.
Great job and great people. I owe Hostess so much for that job. It opened a door of opportunity that changed my whole life. Sad to see the company liquidate.
