What Dexter initially did to LaGuerta (making it look like she'd tried to frame him, therefore ruining her career) was exactly the kind of comeuppance I wanted her to get, but then they had to go and kill her off. And I wish someone had pointed out the irony of Dexter deciding to kill LaGuerta to protect himself, when that was EXACTLY why Miguel Prado had resolved to kill her in Season 3. I remember Dexter even had a picture of Maria in Miguel's kill room along with Ellen Wolf's picture. There's no longer any real difference between Dexter and the people he has hunted, and that's kind of the show's point, but I wonder how they will recover from that. An audience likes to see its heroes "go bad" for a while, but it also likes to see them return to what they really are and rediscover themselves. But when the "going bad" involves the cold-blooded murder of innocents who are just doing their jobs, is there any real coming back from that?
Good points and interesting thoughts. I agree they've turned a dark corner with this ending. One of the writers was on an interview on Showtime and seemed to suggest part of their thinking is to put distance between the audience and Dexter. Maybe that will be interesting and maybe not. It seems to be working for other shows where the main character is as evil as evil gets (ldsfaqs mentioned two above) but I think you hit the key point above: Dexter has been a hero of sorts so far. A hard turn might be too much for the fans who have been with the show all these years.
I also like and agree with your thoughts on Deb.
Final "unbelievable" moment: LaGuerta went to help Hector Estrada all by herself? And Dexter knew she would be showing up without back-up? Come on.
Exactly. Maybe, maybe, I'd buy that she didn't call for back-up because she was afraid of being made into even more of a fool and wanted to "show them" she was right. But still...taking on Dexter alone when she though he was the Bay Harbor Butcher doesn't seem like LaGuerta. I'd have expected her to bring someone along. She's always been cunningly smart and this was out of character for her. Really, who better to sniff out a trap than a master trap setter?
I'm still annoyed about how they killed her off when it was looking so much more promising.
