Five Reasons Why Fewer People Trust Fox News Than Ever Before

Image

A poll released Wednesday by Public Policy Polling shows that fewer people than ever trust Fox News as a source for accurate news and reporting. Just 41 percent expressed trust in the network — down from 49 four years ago — while 46 percent said they distrust Fox. There’s an obvious reason why: Fox misrepresents facts and fudges its data to advance the conservative agenda. Indeed, it’s nothing like the “fair and balanced” network it claims to be. And, it seems, voters are catching on.

Here are just five recent examples of how Fox skews the news:

1. They misrepresented the unemployment rate. Fox News ran this chart showing the unemployment rate, but managed to somehow make an unemployment rate of 8.6 percent look higher than 8.9:

Image

2. They misinformed viewers about Benghazi. When Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), Lindsay Graham (R-SC), and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) were trying their hardest to smear President Obama and former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton over Benghazi, Fox ran an “exclusive” report saying that the CIA had denied a diplomat permission to fend off an attack on the embassy. That never happened, and details later confirmed that the report — and the other conspiracy theories Fox ran alongside it — was totally unfounded.

3. They blamed non-existent ‘massive layoffs’ on Obama. Fox News runs frequent segments covering Obama’s supposed ‘War on Coal’ and the website Fox Nation even ran this glaring headline blaming the election for huge layoffs in the coal industry. But there were not massive layoffs. Just one business owner in Utah laid off employees. Under Obama, the industry on the whole has actually continued to grow tremendously.

Image

4. They got almost all of their climate coverage wrong. An analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists revealed that a full 93 percent of Fox News coverage on the topic global climate change was ‘misleading.’ Here’s the breakdown of how Fox covered the climate issue:

Image

5. They don’t cover big stories. While the rest of the country discussed senatorial candidate Todd Akin’s ‘legitimate rape’ comments, Fox News hardly covered the controversy. They similarly ignored the conflict surrounding the death of teenager Trayvon Martin, and of New York’ssame-sex marriage law’s passage.

The list of areas where Fox falls down on the job is too extensive to enumerate. But what is clear is that Fox’s method of dodging the truth and giving convenient facts won’t keep working, if they can’t gain the public’s trust.

Fox Cedes Solar Industry To Germany

Fox News claimed that the future of solar power in the U.S. is "dim" because we have less sunlight than countries like Germany, the current world leader in solar generation. But Fox completely reversed the facts: the U.S. receives far more direct sunlight, but has been outperformed due to Germany's superior solar policies.

On Fox & Friends, co-host Gretchen Carlson claimed that the U.S. solar "industry's future looks dim." The show brought on Fox Business reporter Shibani Joshi, who said that Germany's solar industry is doing "great" because "they've got a lot more sun than we do," before adding, "In California, it's a great solution, but here on the East Coast it's just not going to work."

The U.S. is lagging behind Germany in solar power generation, but it doesn't have anything to do with our solar potential. In fact, the Southwest has "among the best photovoltaic resources in the world," according to a report by GTM Research. And even the East Coast states have greater solar potential than Germany, as illustrated by this map from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory:

Image

But while Germany gets relatively little sunlight, it does have a more coherent national solar policy than the U.S., as Bloomberg Businessweek reported in October 2012:

Unlike the U.S., Germany has a national solar policy, a quick, inexpensive permitting process, and a national mandate that utilities sign up rooftop installations under what's known as a feed-in tariff--essentially a long-term contract whereby the utilities agree not just to allow the solar on their grids but also to buy the excess power from consumers.

And while Joshi argued that the government should not invest in solar because the industry has not proven it can "take the training wheels off," the U.S. solar industry has actually made great strides. A late 2012 report from the Energy Information Administration found that solar capacity nearly doubled in 2011, part of a consistent growth trend over the past few years. And the price of solar is falling at a rate that could make it as cheap as our current electricity by 2020. An industry jobs census from the Solar Foundation found that solar employment has grown 27 percent since 2010, and a Brookings report found that solar jobs growth far outpaced that of the economy at large between 2003 and 2010.

And this one is for all the times we've heard about how the Liberal media refuses to break stories that criticize their own... it is really a myth. But folks like subgenius and bcspace wouldn't know it because they never pay any attention to the "elite liberal media." They just take for granted whatever their Right Wing media outlet happens to say about them.

Bill O'Reilly Wonders Why NBC Hasn't Covered Drones When NBC Broke The Story (VIDEO)

Bill O'Reilly sat down with Fox News' designated liberal host Bob Beckel on Wednesday night and claimed that NBC News has not been covering the controversy over President Obama's drones policy in wake of the Justice Department memo that was recently obtained (see update below).

"Heard anything on NBC about the drones?" O'Reilly asked Beckel Wednesday night. Beckel said he had not. O'Reilly continued, "You haven't heard anything over there about this, neither have I, neither has my staff." The Fox News host then charged that NBC News has not discussed the White House drone policy because the network is "protecting the president."

Unfortunately for O'Reilly (and his staff), NBC News' Michael Isikoff obtained a copy of the memo discussing the legality of Obama's drones policy and broke the story exclusively for the network. The memo was a major get for Isikoff and the network, and has been a major topic of reporting and discussion on both NBC News and MSNBC since Monday night.

The story led NBC News' website Monday night and into Tuesday. MSNBC's Rachel Maddow hosted Isikoff on her show Monday night to discuss his major scoop. NBC's "Nightly News" also reported a story on the drones memo Tuesday night.

Moreover, the lead story on this very page Wednesday was about MSNBC's divided hosts. The network devoted a significant portion of its Tuesday coverage to discussing drones and the memo, and some hosts sharply disagree with one another. Hosts including Joe Scarborough, Rachel Maddow, Ed Schultz, Chris Matthews and the roundtable of "The Cycle" all devoted major portions of their shows to the exclusively obtained drones memo.

This really leaves us wondering—has anyone over at O'Reilly's show turned on NBC News or MSNBC this week?

UPDATE: 1:30 p.m. -- TVNewser learned that O'Reilly will address the comments he made about NBC News on his Thursday night program.

Jon Stewart went after the Obama administration on this issue with considerable force just last night.

Yes indeed, I saw that too. In fact, all of the MSNBC shows had this as their primary story. Schultz, Maddow, O'Donnell, and also the Cenk show on Current TV. In fact it seems the "elite Liberal media" is covering this issue far more than FOX News. As Maddow was grilling Obama on this issue I flipped over to O'Reilly to see what he was talking about. It was some BS about immigrants or the war on Christmas.

O'Reilly goes on the air to defend his previous remarks about NBC and drones, by lying about what he originally said! This guy must really have absolute confidence that his listeners are only those who remain firmly inside the bubble. He throws a conniption fit about who its the "loony left" that is lying and trying to marginalize him as they have for years. This guy sounds just like a Mormon apologist, always the victim, no matter what he's lying about.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/0 ... 44973.html

On his Thursday show, Bill O'Reilly slammed what he called "far left loons" who accused him of getting his facts wrong earlier in the week.

On Wednesday, O'Reilly (along with guest Bob Beckel) said that he had seen "nothing" about President Obama's controversial drone program on NBC in recent days — despite the fact that it was NBC which broke the latest news about the program, thus providing O'Reilly with a reason to bash NBC for its subservience to Obama.

Multiple websites (including this one) pointed out this flub, and O'Reilly promised to address the matter on Thursday.

And address it he did! "More deceit from the far left!" he boomed at the end of his show. "For 17 long years, these loons have been trying to marginalize me."

He continued:

“Now, last night, I talked with Bob Beckel about the difference in analysis on the subject of waterboarding as compared to killing people with drones, a policy that President Obama embraces. I put forth that NBC News and other media places, they were hysterical over waterboarding, but muted over President Obama’s drone attacks, at least until yesterday.

Immediately, the far left machine cranked up! 'O’Reilly didn’t say that NBC News broke the drone memo story. He’s a deceiver!' True! I didn’t say NBC broke the memo story because we weren’t talking about that. Waterboarding versus drone strikes. So once again, we have a propaganda campaign designed to make ignorant people on the left even more ignorant. Factor Tip Of The Day: Don't deal with loons."

As one of the "loony" places noting the discrepancy between O'Reilly's words and the facts, we feel compelled to point some things out.

Here's how O'Reilly put it to Bob Beckel on Wednesday: "Heard anything on NBC about the drones? ... You haven't heard anything over there about this, neither have I, neither has my staff ... we heard a lot about waterboarding, but nothing about drone strikes." Note that the words "analysis" never appear.

Again, NBC broke the story, and both NBC and MSNBC had lots of coverage about the story. So, even O'Reilly's claim about a lack of analysis is not quite true, though he is certainly not the first to point out the discrepancy between some liberals' heated disdain for Bush-era policies and their embrace of Obama-era ones.
